VRWC Results - Summer Season 2002/2003

VRWC Logo

The Summer Season occurs between October and March and coincides with the long hot Australian summer. The emphasis in on track walking and most races are over the shorter track distances. There is also a strong walking presence in the 'Interclub' Track Competition with all Athletics Teams fielding walkers in their regular competitions.

For this reason, VRWC only holds a small number of events during this period.

ALBERT PARK - SUNDAY 27 OCT 2002

A small number of walkers took the opportunity to have a walk in the first of our 4 scheduled walk days at Albert Park this summer. We can expect the numbers to grow for our next 2 walks as walkers get back into training for the summer and want to do some longer races. We had a variety of events and the day was windy with the occasional shower.

VRWC EVENTS, ALBERT PARK, SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER 2002

We were pretty worried with a forecast of a sunny windy 34o but the expected change came through early and cooler cloudy conditions made for perfect racing conditions. A good turnout of 30 walkers competed and Brian Trower was our gamest competitor, doing a solid 20 km performance.

VRWC CHRISTMAS RACES, ALBERT PARK, SUNDAY 15 DECEMBER 2002

We are always at the mercy of the weather for these annual races and this year we copped a beauty – 35oC and lots of sun. We had quite a number of walkers who came down hoping for good times – including AIS walkers Claire Woods and Cheryl Webb. And young Irish walker Hugh Fitzpatrick who is over here with his family on holidays must have wondered what struck him! Last year at this time, conditions were good and the times were scorchers but on this occasion the day was a scorcher and the times suffered.
The two main events from our perspective were out two memorial races and they were ably won by Paul Van Kopplen and Heather Carr. Well done to Paul and Heather.

VRWC ROAD EVENTS, ALBERT PARK, SUNDAY 2 FEBRUARY 2003

Our monthly summer race at Albert Park was very well attended and we used a fast 1 km course that everyone seemed to enjoy. The early pace was set by Simone Wolowiec (down from Canberra) and Megan Peters while Chris Erickson and Jared Tallent were content to sit back and enjoy a quieter pace. Simone held it all together very well to record an excellent 47:21 in her first race since the Commonwealth Games. Megan went through the 10 km mark in a quick 49:24 to also beat the 50 min barrier.

Amongst the other good performers were Brian Trower who improved a couple of mins on his recent 20 km form and Simon Evans who did a huge 10 km PB – Simon has only been walking since the World Masters and is improving very quickly.
We now have a new category of race – the fitness walk – and 3 first time walkers took up the challenge for the 5 km distance and did very well. Let’s hope it marks the start of this event as a valuable contribution to the scene.
