VRWC Results - Winter Season 2021
The Winter Season occurs between April and September and covers
the
Australian winter. Conditions are generally superb for road walking
with
mild winter temperatures, fast courses and lots of competition for all
age groups.
VICTORIAN ROADWALK CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 1 AUGUST 2021

We
did not find out until mid week whether our Victorian covid
restrictions would be eased sufficiently to allow the Victorian
Roadwalk Championships to take place on Sunday morning. The news was
good so our walkers had to quickly decide whether to enter before
entries closed. Perhaps unsurprisingly, we only saw 40 walkers turn out
to race in what was our smallest championship meet field for quite some
time. Covid-19 is certainly taking its toll on us all. Well done to
those who did turn out and brave the cold conditions.
The long walks were first off, at 8:30AM, with Mark Blackwood
leading them out. He finished as the fastest in the AMA 20km postal
walk (1:45:44) and then continued on to win the Victorian 30km
Championship (his first time over 30km since returning to walking in
2017) with 2:38:39. Sarah Brennan was the only woman in the field and she finished the Masters 20km with 1:55:47, only 1 minute outside her PB.

Saturday
afternoon saw one of our biggest meets for the winter, with the
Victorian Masters 10km Championships held alongside the Victorian leg
of the annual Racewalking Australia State Challenge and our own VRWC
races. We had a number of entrants who did not make it to Middle Park
but we still had 51 competitors, our biggest number of the winter. The
other great news is that we had finishers in EVERY RWA Challenge
division, so big thanks to all our walkers who came along and supported
the club.
The 10km and 8km walkers were the first to head off. Heather Carr (1:07:43, W71) and Andrew Jamieson
(1:00:26, M75) took maximum age graded points in the RWA Challenge.
They were amongst the 15 walkers who contested the annual VMA
Roadwalk Championship. Fastest masters times went to Mark Blackwood (46:22, M44) and Carolyn Rosenbrock (W59 1:01:23). 2021 Olympic walker Kyle Swan was fastest overall with a very comfortable 44:18. Fraser Saunder excelled in the U18 8km (a huge PB of 37:15). I can hardly wait to see him take on his first 10km in a few weeks time.

Our
VRWC winter season continued on Saturday afternoon with another round
of roadwalks at Middle Park. I think most of the 45 walkers in
attendance approached raceday with some trepidation, given the forecast
for very cold and wet weather. The temperature was certainly low, with
a cold win, but the rain stayed away and a weak sun even came out to
tempt us.
The longer distance walks were first off at 2:15PM, with 2021 Olympian Kyle Swan
leading the field from the gun. He stormed through to 43:34 for the
10km, barely raising a puff in what was an impressive workout. 15 year
old Emily Smith was attempting her first 10km and she did it in style, finishing with 58:51. Well done to Julian Boland who upped his distance and also completed his first 10km. On the 12km front, Mark Blackwood (59:49) and Madeleine Feain (1:06:29) took line honours.

Consider her 1km splits 4:50, 5:06, 5:08, 5:12 and 5:06. Her final time
of 25:22 set new U11 and U12 club records and, in addition, her 3km
split time of 15:04 shattered her own U11 and U12 3km club record time
of 15:15. She has already broken lots of our longstanding club records
and looks set to create new standards that will be very hard to match.

Again, we saw lots of Pbs and quite a few first time VRWC attendees -welcome to Julia Baldy, Lilah Stevens and Jackson Hartley. And for quite a few of our 1.5km walkers, they were walking further than ever before – great work all round.

Perfect
conditions greeted the 50 walkers who assembled at Middle Park on
Sunday morning. There were lots of championship events on offer and we
saw some fine walking.
First to the 15km and 10km walks which kicked off at 9AM. Our top walkers were all out in force, with Rhydian Cowley leading from the front and going on to win with a super fast 1:00:17. Behind him, 18 year old Will Thompson stormed through to finish with a new VRWC U20 record time of 1:02:51, ahead of Quentin Rew with 1:03:35 and Kyle Swan with 1:05:54. The women were led home by Jemima Montag, whose 1:05:29 was a new VRWC Open record. Not to be outdone, 19 year old Rebecca Henderson came in next with 1:09:56, a new VWRC U20 record. The fastest 10km walkers were Heath Beveridge (48:58) and Charlotte Hay (a big PB of 51:02). Overall, a huge set of results.

We
were back at Middle Park on Saturday afternoon for the latest round of
the VRWC Winter Roadwalking Season. This was our annual ‘Guess Your
Time’ raceday. It’s a great idea – walkers choose their distance and
then guess their finish time. The gun goes and the race get underway.
No watches are worn and no times are called. It’s a case of how well
you can judge your pace.
Conditions
were just about perfect – cool and still with even a bit of winter sun.
We had 39 walkers in total, as our numbers gradually rebuild
post-covid. Overall, the racing was very competitive and there were
plenty of PBs. The placegetters in each race (ie those who were closest
to their guesstimate) got to choose from the prizes tables. We had a
lot of very excited walkers!
Congratulations to our winners Kevin Cassidy, Heather Carr, Madeleine Feain, Kelsey Loudon and Annika Semmens Erickson.
Well done also to all those walkers who did PBs (details below) and to
those who completed their longest ever races and a special shout out
for 10 year old Ela Uzun who set another club record (U11 2km roadwalk) with her superb time of 9:45.

LBG MT STROMLO RACEWALKING AUSTRALIA CARNIVAL, CANBERRA, SUNDAY 13 JUNE 2021
The 54th edition of the
annual LBG Racewlking Carnival was successfully contested at the Mt
Stomlo Forest Park in Canberra last Sunday. The weather had warmed up
from the antarctic conditions of the day before, and it was sunny and
still for the day. Alas, no metro Melbourne walkers could make the trip
(unless they were already in Canberra) so the carnival numbers were
hard hit. Our Victorian team was decimated, with only a very small
contingent from Ballarat, Geelong and Gippsland able to attend. They
did fantastically, with just about everyone winning a medal or a
handicap award. The medals went to

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 15 MAY 2021
A
good turnout of 44 walkers braved the elements at Middle Park on
Saturday afternoon for the latest round of the VRWC winter season. As
Melbourne suffered through a weekend of antarctic cold, the competitors
seemed to thrive in the low termperatures and blustery winds, with lots
of PBs and plenty of strong walks.
Alison Thompson (1:18:41) and Donna-Marie Elms (1:21:11) were the only two brave souls who tested themselves out over 12km. Kyle Swan (42:58) led from the front as usual in the 10km while Mark Blackwood (23:03) and Ariana Pashutina (25:41) were best in the 5km walk. Special mentions to Madeleine Feain (big PB of 53:54 in the 10km) and Kate Saviour who did her longest walk yet with the club, finishing her 10km in an impressive 58:48.

had a great battle, with Pramesh (15:13) just pipping Ela (15:15).
Ela’s time was yet another big PB, breaking our VRWC U11 and U12 club
records. Her 9 year old cousin Havana Ali was also in PB mode with her 3km time of 17:02. In fact, if you inspect the results, there were PBs galore. Well done to Christal Xie – her first walk last week was a 2km and this week she upped the ante to 3km (21:15).

We will be back at Middle Park next Saturday for our next round of the VRWC Winter Roadwalking Season.VRWC, AV, VMA AND AA ROADWALKS, FAWKNER PARK, SUNDAY 2 MAY 2021
Fawkner
Park in Melbourne was the venue for our VRWC races on Sunday morning,
with the meet also hosting the Victorian 20km and Victorian Masters
20km Championships, along with an Athletics Australia Invitational 20km
walk. Conditions were overcast with temperatures in the low twenties so
pretty good overall.
The 20km walkers headed off together at 8:30AM, with Rhydian Cowley going to an immediate lead, shadowed as usual by Declan Tingay and Kyle Swan.
Rhydian soon cleared away, going on to win with an excellent 1:21:49,
yet another quality performance from our top male walker. Quentin Rew
is returning to good form (it looks like he is timing things nicely to
return to top form for the Olympic 50km in early August) and came
through to take second with 1:24:37, ahead of Kyle who finished third
with 1:25:27. Declan faded to finish fourth with 1:27:59, the victim of a badly timed a gastric issue. Mitch Baker
was another who was well up early but he also faded and eventually
retired. It has been a very long summer for our elite walkers, with one
race after another, and a lot of training camps in between, so it was
perhaps not surprising that times were a bit down overall.
We only had three women in attendance, but they were our top three so a high quality race ensued. Jemima Montag walked with 19 year old Rebecca Henderson for the entire race, Jemima winning overall with 1:31:51, while Rebecca doing a 19 sec PB to finish with 1:31:53. Katie Hayward was not far behind for most of the race but slowed a bit in the last couple of laps to finish with 1:34:16. Sarah Brennan
(1:54:32) and Rhydian won the Victorian Championship and a number of
additional walkers filled out the field in the Victorian Masters
Championships.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 10 APRIL 2021
Saturday was a wintery day in
Melbourne, with rain and cold strong winds, but it takes a lot to put
off a group of determined athletes, with 20 walkers braving the
conditions and lining up for our season opener at Middle Park.
Since these were our first Points Competition races for the winter, I
need to explain how this works. Firstly, there are 3 separate
competitions that accumulate points each week – the Handicap, Style
Awards and Actual Time Competitions. These are explained on page http://www.vrwc.org.au/vrwcpointscomps.shtml.
Everyone who finishes gets Actual Time Points, but only those who have
previous races with us over today’s distance or a comparable one can be
awarded Handicap Points. It’s tricky stuff but club handicapper Mark
Donahoo keeps tabs on it all and produces regular updates. The Actual
Time and Handicap points for today are already uploaded to the
vrwcpointscomps page. Style Award still to be done.
The longer races were first up, with Mark
Blackwood leading everyone around to finish his 8km with a very
respectable 37:19. Behind him, Pramesh
Prasad and Kevin Cassidy
had a great battle before Pramesh cleared away. Kylie Irshad was the best of the
women with a good 47:29 for her 8km. And a special mention to 85 year
old club legend Bob Gardiner who walked 4km before deciding to call it
quits.

The 2km and 1km races were off next, with the littlies zooming around
the course and showing us just how it’s done. Ela Uzun was the standout as usual,
with 10:25 for the 2km. PBs in the 2km also to Havana Ali (11:22) and Cody Wapshott (14:15). The 1km saw 5
young walkers having their first races with us – Heidi Kuppler, Matilda Read, Violet Froom,
Haris Ali and Aydin Uzun.
And they all looked great. Unfortunately, Heidi went off course but I
think we adjusted her time to take this into accoun – we will make sure
we have a bike going around in front of the short distance races so
that we can show everyone where to go. Sorry about that! And finally,
our usual club photographer, Terry Swan, was not there today, so no
photos.
