VRWC Results - Summer Season 2024/2025
The Winter Season occurs between April and September and covers
the
Australian winter. Conditions are generally superb for road walking
with
mild winter temperatures, fast courses and lots of competition for all
age groups.
VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 12 JANUARY 2025
19
VRWC walkers returned to Middle Park on Sunday morning for the final
round of our 2024/2025 summer season. Luckily, we were done and gone
before thunderstorms and torrential rain struck Melbourne just after
midday. It felt very much like a quiet Sunday morning with Eden Morgan
the only starter over 15km, having his debut at the distance and
settling down for a first-up 1:17:58 after an early string of sub-5:00
kms. Angus Shuttleworth and Jonathan Ho
set up the most competitive finish of the morning in the 5km, with
Jonathan chasing Angus over the last 1km before turning on a burst of
speed that fell 2 secs short of catching him and 10 secs outside his
PB. The 3km attracted the biggest field, with Mietta Morgan taking line honours in 17:51 from Emily Smith by a mere 5 secs. 9yo Anouk Morgan had her first crack at the 3km distance for a pleasing 22:20 It was great to see Heather Carr
back in harness after a long period of injury recovery. Welcoming new
members is always a pleasure, and on this occasion it was Shaun Lewis and daughter Kobe
who had their first races with us. Shaun’s 2km time of 11:43 came off
the back of his first-ever 5000m the day before at AVSL, a sub-30min
effort in the scorching heat. Kobe had also raced at Meadowglen
on Saturday, over 2000m, so her 5:46 in our 1km race was a good
follow-up.

AUSTRALIAN 35KM CHAMPIONSHIP MEET, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 15 DECEMBER 2024
The
Australian 35km Championship this year was changed from its usual
Fawkner Park venue to Middle Park and was held on the VRWC 1km
Championship Course alongside Albert Park Lake. The 7AM start ensured
good conditions early but it did warm up as the morning progressed. But
the event was well timed, with the Melbourne temperature on Monday
expected to reach 40C. Thanks goodness we did not have that sort of day
to contend with.
The 35km Championship and the 20km Invitational
Walk were both high quality events and are well reported by Athletics
Australia at https://www.athletics.com.au/news/sandery-and-cowley-crowned-35km-race-walk-champions-in-melbourne. VRWC report in https://www.vrwc.org.au/newsletters/heelandtoe-2024-num50.pdf.

We
had 21 walkers in attendance for our VRWC summer road championships at
Middle Park on Sunday morning. Conditions were perfect and we were
excited to welcome 4 of our 2024 Olympians (Will Thompson, Rhydian Cowley, Declan Tingay and Rebecca Henderson) who had signed up for a training stroll in the 20km Club Championship. They were joined by NSW and Australian rep Dylan Richardson, along with VRWC members Alejandro Stephens and Jia Wen Heng.
Alejandro led them through the first 15km before finally being swept up
by the chasing group, around the same time that Jia retired. Back
together, the 6 walkers all crossed the line together, with a shared
final time of 1:44:36. It required a bit of scrutiny to pick the
placegetters - Will, Rhydian and Declan in the men's championship and Rebecca in the women's championship.

The
opening round of our VRWC summer season saw 19 walkers in attendance on
Sunday morning at Middle Park for a selection of different road races.
