VRWC Results - Summer Season 2020/2021
The Summer Season occurs between October and March and coincides
with the long hot Australian summer. The emphasis in on track walking
and most races are over the shorter track distances. There is also a
strong walking presence in the 'Interclub' Track Competition with all
Athletics Teams fielding walkers in their regular competitions.
For this reason, VRWC only holds a small number of events during this period.
VRWC AND VMA TRACK WALKS, CLIFTON HILL, SUNDAY 21 MARCH 2021
VRWC wound up
its summer season with one final track carnival at the George Knott
Athletics Track at Clifton Hill on Sunday morning. Conditions were wet
but not too bad overall for the 24 walkers who turned out.
There were some good performances in the annual Victorian Masters 5000m track walks. Fastest times overall to Sarah Brennan (26:49) and Kevin Cassidy (26:29) and PBs to Laura McLennan (30:46) and Marnie Grace (32:42).

AV AND VRWC TRACK WALKS, CLIFTON HILL, SUNDAY 14 MARCH 2021
VRWC
hosted the Victorian 5000m Walk Team Championships at the George Knot
Stadium in Clifton Hill on Sunday morning as part of its latest summer
season carnival. Unfortunately the timing was not perfect as it
coincided with the Victorian Little Athletics Champiionships but we
still saw 24 walkers overall. Charlotte Hay (25:25) and Corey Dickson
(22:54) guided their Knox Athletics Club teams to victory in the men’s
and women’s teams races. The St Kevins walkers also fielded a men’s
team, putting the pressure on Anthony Barrett to dust of the racing shoes for the first time in a while. Special mentions to Marcus Wakim (24:19) and Liam Hutchins (26:09) who both recorded good PBs and to Joel Imbriano who walked his first ever 5000m.

AA AND VRWC TRACK WALKS, CLIFTON HILL, SUNDAY 31 JANUARY 2021
The latest
VRWC Summer Series races, at the George Knott Athletics Track in
Clifton Hill, gained a huge boost in prestige with the scheduling of
the second of two Athletics Australia Supernova Camp Elite 10,000m
track walks. This mixed event, which saw 13 competitors, kicked off
proceedings at 9AM in absolutely perfect weather (cool, overcast and
still). And did the walkers make the most of the opportunity, with 9
PBs, a World Junior qualifier and a new Victorian Record.
Rhydian Cowley and Declan Tingay
have been leading the walkers out in their recent Melbourne based
training camp, and they continued this today with a superb contest out
in front. Rhydian held on to win with 39:14.6, just ahead of Declan
with 39:17.4. Both were PBs. Kyle Swan was
next to finish with his own PB of 40:28.5, breaking Nathan Deakes’ VRWC club U23 record. With the postponed 2020
World Athletics U20 Championships to be held this coming August in
Kenya, 18 year old Will Thompson
surged into Australian team contention with his fourth place finishing
time of 41:50.6, a huge PB and well under the Australian standard of
43:20. Then came Jemima Montag,
smashing her Victorian record once again with her time of 42:35.3. This
propels her to third place on the Australian all-time list, behind only
Kerry Saxby Junna (41:30) and Jane Saville (42:15). Wow! 17 year old Alanna Peart
also showed her World Junior intentions with her PB time of 48:36, just
outside the Australian standar of 48:20. And to round things out, we
also saw PBs to Tim Fraser (43:09.4), Corey Dickson (43:37.2) and Bec Henderson (45:20.9). What a set of results!

winners were Jemma Peart (25:01), Marcus Wakim (14:33) and Ela Uzun (7:21). Special mentions to 9 year old Ela and to her even younger cousin Havana Ali who just keep doing PBs week after week. Impressive walking for ones so young!

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 6 DECEMBER 2020
Sunday saw
the final VRWC walks carnival for the year, but it was hard to believe
that it was summer in Melbourne, with a blustery cold wind, and
with rain which pelted down towards the end. What a year it has been
for us all! All I can say is that I hope that 2021 will shine brightly
on us all.
This week saw 34 walkers in attendance, with 6 courageous souls testing
themselves out over 20km. The highlight of that race was the
performance of 71 year old Heather Carr
who broke the Australian Masters W70 20km record by over 7 minutes, her
final time of 2:22:49 also of course a Victorian Masters and VRWC
record. And along the way, she set a new VRWC W70 15km record of
1:45:20. I must also give a special mention to Madeleine Feain who has been shattering all her PBs this summer. Sunday was no exception as she took 4 minutes of her PB with 1:55:17.

The 10km race saw a big group of our young champions upping the ante
and testing themselves over a longer distance, most for the first time.
That list included 13 year olds Ariana Pashutina, Liam Hutchins and Riley Coughlan, 14 year old Emily Smith, 16 year olds Owen Costin and Fraser Saunder and 17 year old Grace Louey. Will Thompson
stormed through to take fastest time with a PB 44:18, even though he
slowed in the final laps. Fraser Saunder also excelled with 49:02 on
his first attempt at the distance. And special mentions to Claire Samanna (big PB of 57:43) and 74 year old Andrew Jamieson (1:00:40 – I wish I could walk that fast!).

(30:56) all impressing. Ela and Havana both broke our VRWC U10 record,
with the older Ela also breaking our U11 record for good measure.
Newcomer Kate Siviour, who
completed her first ever walk last week, upped the ante this week with
a fantastic 29:32. And a final mention for 16 year old Jade Chitty (31:13) who is also steadily improving each week.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 28 NOVEMBER 2020
Saturday
afternoon saw Round 4 of the VRWC Summer Season, with further roadwalks
at Middle Park. Although conditions were just about perfect, the same
could not be said for our course, after a major water leak in the bowls
club had left the southern half of our 2km course unusable. Thus, we
were forced to use our northern 1km loop for all our races. But on the
good side, with covid restriction eased, we were able to have mass
starts rather than the staggered starts of the last few weeks.
Mark Blackwood (23:01) and Rebecca Henderson
(24:23) were our fastest walkers overall, both contesging the 5km walk.
But all the action seemed to be happening in the 3km walk, with PBs
galore by our young walkers, many of whom had already competed in
Little Athletics in the morning. Special mentions to Daniel Pashutin (31 sec PB), Ela Uzun (U10 Club record) and Kate Siviour (a great time of 16:54 in her first ever walk). Madeleine Feain (9:40) and Kevin Cassidy (9:44) had a great battle in the 2km, while we welcomed Warragul walkers Fraser, Lewis and Alexandra Aubrey for their second walk with us (they walked in our sole winter season event in July).

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 21 NOVEMBER 2020
We returned
to Middle Park for round 3 of our VRWC summer season competition on
Saturday afternoon, and the 29 walkers made the most of the great
conditions for some competitive racing under COVID Rules (staggered
starts, 1km courses, etc). Hopefully, further restrictions to be lifted
next week, and we will be able to welcome more walkers and use our full
course. The Bowling Club is under going extensive renovations and is
impeding our clubrooms - short term loss for long term gain. Our rooms
will be open soon.
There were lots of PBs by our young walkers, especially in the 3km walk, which was contested in two parts. And 9 year old Ela Uzun continues her record spree, with her 1km time of 4:57 a new U10 record.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2020
Our second
round of the VRWC Summer Season was held on Sunday morning at Middle
Park. The numbers were up on last week, with 33 competitors in
attendance. The morning started cool and still but the wind soon picked
up and, by the time we finished, strong winds were buffering the
walkers.
The highlight of the day were provided by 10km walkers Jemima Montag and Rhydian Cowley
who powered through the 10km in a very evenly paced 43:57. Given that
Jemima’s PB is 43:50, she was in top form in her first race in a long
time. And did she look good! There were lots of PBs overall – Ariana Pashutina, Madeleine Feain, Ela Uzun and Havana Ali – and aquite few walkers attempting a particular distance for the first time – Liam Hutchins, Riley Coughlan, Maddison Nash and Daniel Pashutin. And for good measure, we had 2 club records – Heather Carr set a new VRWC and VMA W70 15km record of 1:46:15 and Ela Uzun set a new VRWC U10 2km record of 10:48.

Our next club races will be on Saturday 21st November at Middle Park.
VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2020
The
Victorian Race Walking Club returned to competition this weekend – only
the second walk in 9 months! Our 2019/2020 summer season finished in
mid February. We returned for one race during the winter, on Saturday
4th July 2020, and then shut down again after Melbourne covid numbers
surged. Saturday 7th November marked a tentative return to competition,
albeit held under strict covid rules, with field sizes restricted to
10, and only those who lived within 25km of the venue able to attend.
It was a low
key start to the season, with only 15 walkers in attendance. The 5km
walkers started at 1:45PM and raced on our southern 1km loop, starting
3 secs apart. The 3km walkers started at 2PM and raced on the northern
1km loop, again using staggered start times. With restrictions due to
be eased on Monday, we hope that our races next Sunday will see more
competitors and a more flexible setup. We will make further
announcements as the week progresses.
Rhydian Cowley was the standout with a fast 20:24 in the 5km. The 3km saw 14 year old Marcus Wakim (14:54), 16 year old Charlotte Hay (15:02) and 9 year old Ela Uzun (15:43) excelling.

Thanks to our
officials and judges and helpers who always turn out in force and keep
the show on the road. It was all made more complicated this week by
major works being undertaken within the Bowls Club complex. Life wasn’t
meant to be easy!
