VRWC Results - Winter Season 2022
The Winter Season occurs between April and September and covers
the
Australian winter. Conditions are generally superb for road walking
with
mild winter temperatures, fast courses and lots of competition for all
age groups.
VRWC TRACKWALKS, MENTONE, SUNDAY 18 SEPTEMBER 2022
The
final VRWC race meet for the winter season saw 20 walkers at Dolomore
Oval in Mentone for the annual VMA 5000m track walks, along with a
couple of VRWC scratch races. Ela Uzun
was in great form, setting an inaugural U12 5000m track record of
25:17. This time also bettered our U13 and U14 club records! Not to be
outdone, 10 year old Havana Ali contested her first 5000m track walk,
setting an inaugural U11 club record. Great work to everyone on a
wonderful season. Time for a quick rest before the summer season kicks
in!

After
two pandemic-driven postponements, the nation’s race walkers were able
finally to assemble for the Australian Winter Walks championships, 2022
edition. The VRWC’s Middle Park headquarters buzzed with the enthusiasm
of over 120 walkers of all ages, resplendent in State uniforms and keen
to try themselves out against quality opposition. Melbourne’s
weather – always the joker in the pack when the best-laid plans are in
place – treated us kindly on this occasion. A chilly wind presented the
only challenge and an incentive to move fast. The results below show
the first 3 in each race, along with all VRWC competitors.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 3 SEPTEMBER 2022
A
pleasant Saturday afternoon greeted the 23 walkers who were in
attendance for our annual VRWC Relay Race day. There were 5 teams
competing, with the teams organised by Mark Donahoo to make the
competition as close as possible. The lead changed on a number of
occasions before Team 4 took what turned out to be the winning lead,
compliments of good walks by Char Hay (who did 2 legs), Aydin Uzun, Marcus Wakim and Zoe Bowkett. Young Beau McKinnon also did 2 legs for team 1 - well done Beau! The relay concept brought out the best in the walkers, with lots of PBs.

The races were followed by our winter season presentations in the Middle Park Bowling Club dining room. VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 27 AUGUST 2022
Stuart Cooper reports on our VRWC walks this weekend at Middle Park.
We
had 22 walkers line up for easily the best weather conditions since May
– indeed, some were showing the effects of the warm sun by race’s end.
We can only hope to enjoy similar weather for next week’s Relay race
and the AA Winter Road championships the following week … but in
Melbourne, of course, you just never know. Most entrants elected for
the shorter races, with only Madeleine Feain (12km) and Alejandro Stephens (10km) completing the longer ones, both backing up from good 20km efforts last Sunday. Marcus Wakim
whipped through 5km in an impressive 22:34, obviously gearing up for a
battle with his interstate U16 rivals in two weeks. Emily Smith was the quickest of the 5km women in 29:09. The 3km saw a good finishing duel between Kevin Cassidy 15:25 and Daniel Pashutin, whose 15:27 was a PB. We were all pleased to see Ariana Pashutina
back on the course, having recovered from a nasty foot fracture that
curtailed her points season. Taking things cautiously and starting in
the 1.5km, Ariana showed she hasn’t lost much fitness with a narrow win
over a determined Mya McClure, 7:46 to 7:51. Biggest improver on the day was Amelia Vernal who demolished her PB by 33secs with a time of 9:22.
And
so to next week and the Relay race – our final Club fixture at Middle
Park for the season (other than the AA/RWA Winter Road championships).
Remember that, immediately following the Relay, our Winter
presentations and Fathers Day raffle draw will be held in the Main
Hall. So come along and get your gong!

Stuart Cooper reports on our VRWC walks this weekend at Middle Park.
A
pocket-sized field of 18 hauled themselves out of bed and faced the
starter in chilly but fine conditions for the AV, VMA and VRWC Men’s
20km championships (the latter including the Alf Robinson Trophy),
along with four Club races. The 20km attracted the largest field, with
8 finishers from 9 starters. The Alf Robinson was a well-deserved
accolade for Alejandro Stephens,
walking his first 20km for identical 10k splits (56:23 each) to win in
1:52:46. The Women’s AV and VMA 20km race saw a convincing win for Sarah Brennan in 1:56:06. Pramesh Prasad and Kevin Cassidy
walked shoulder to shoulder for the first half before ‘Mesh’ pulled
away to clock the fastest Men’s VMA result with 1:58:47 to Kevin’s

Stuart Cooper reports on our VRWC walks this weekend at Middle Park where we saw 30 walkers in action.
Surprisingly
fine, spring-like weather greeted the 30 walkers for our final Points
day at Middle Park on Saturday, with the rain forecast for ‘the
afternoon’ thankfully sparing us while giving the northern suburbs a
drenching. The incentive of gaining more points before the closure
– plus it being a handicap prizes day – resulted in several PB’s,
including a ‘monster’ improvement of 7:44 over 6km by Eden Morgan. Others to cut big slabs from their previous bests were Marcus Wakim, Grace Louey and Zoe Bowkett, while Heather Carr
had a nice present of a handicap win – and a prize – on her
birthday. We were also pleased to welcome a guest walker from
Queensland, Destinee Pickvance-Yee,
who had her first-ever 4km race and scored the fastest women’s time for
the distance on the day. We hope to see Destinee in Mebourne again for
the RWA road championships on 11 September.

Stuart Cooper reports on our VRWC walks this weekend at Middle Park where we saw 26 walkers in action.
Between
Friday and Saturday night showers we were treated to a window of fine,
even warmish weather, thankfully with no wind. Just a bit of water
baling needed beforehand. With Yarra Trams carrying out work on
the Light rail underpass and motor traffic having to cross our racing
course to access the car park, it seemed we might have had to use the
twisty northern 1km arm for our program. This, thankfully, was not the
case, and we are grateful to 888Traffic for their assistance in
guaranteeing our walkers safe passage during their races.

Hello
everyone. Thanks to VRWC president Stuart Cooper for forwarding today's
AV/VRWC results to me in Europe where I am enjoying a cycling holiday.
Stu
reports that the morning was cold though dry, with an icy, gale-force
wind bending the walkers almost double at some stages. Fast times hard
to obtain.
There were 34 walkers in attendance so a smaller turnout than usual but still
some good walks. First to the Victorian Roadwalk Championship results
which are shown below. It was disappointing to see no starters in the
AV Open 30km walk but our top walkers are at the Commonwealth Games at
the moment so not available to contest the event. A special welcome to
young Bendigo walkers Charlise and Tate McQueen who contested the U14 events.

The
VRWC winter season continued on Saturday with the latest round of
roadwalks, which saw an attendance of 28 athletes. It was cool with a
slight drizzle at times, but still so good racing conditions overall.
We saw a small number of PBs, with perhaps the best walks by Grace Louey, Jade Chitty, Ela Uzun and Beau McKinnon.

Last
Saturday afternoon saw our annual VRWC RWA Challenge, along with the
RWA 10km championships. Well, at least it didn’t rain, but the winds
were very strong and made the going tough for the 32 walkers in
attendance. The masters numbers were disappointedly small, but Pramesh Prasad (57:32) and Carolyn Rosenbrock
(1:00:44) put in good performances. We had walkers in nearly all our
other RWA Challenge categories, from Open down to U10. And we welcomed
back Anand Thillaisundaram who had his first walk with us since 2013.

Another
cold and winter's afternoon in Melbourne but dry and relatively still,
so pretty good overall for the 23 walkers who attended out Intervals
Day. It was good to see most of the walkers finishing either 5 of 4
intervals, spaced out every 17 minutes. Riley Coughlan and Geromi Tucker led them out each lap, with Riley eventually outlasting Geromi for fastest time overall.

The
forecast was for a wet and cold afternoon but the morning was a beauty
- still, dry and with a bit of sun thrown in as an added extra, and I
am sure the 41 walkers in attendance made the most of the perfect
winter conditions. It was exciting to see so many of our top walkers in
attendance and they gave a fine demonstration of walking at speed - Declan Tingay 59;59, Kyle Swan 1:00:51, Rhydian Cowley 1:00:58, Quentin Rew 1:01:56, Jemima Montag 1:09:12 and Bec Henderson 1:09:50. Stu Coopoer reports:
With
a full program of overseas races this year, we haven’t seen many of our
top walkers at Middle Park for the winter program. Therefore, finding
no fewer than six (6) current Olympians (and one former one) hitting
the 2k circuit for the AV 15km championship was something to savour, as
it promised fast, high-quality racing. And so it proved. Declan Tingay,
competing by invitation, surged away in the second half to cross first
and break 1 hour by a bare second. This was equivalent to a 1:20:00
20km … impressive stuff considering the absence of long straights on
the Middle Park club course. Jemima Montag, in cracking form, took the
women’s title in 1:09:12, finishing with plenty in the tank. The
course’s twists and loops were no barrier to Kyle Swan and Bec
Henderson as both smashed previous bests by huge margins, with Kyle
winning the men’s title and Rhydian Cowley not too far from his own PB
for silver. Char Hay ventured into new territory, walking her first 15
for a creditable 1:22:08 and bronze. Also on the podium was Michael Harvey,
a veteran of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and many times an
international, who still finds the call of his old racing days hard to
resist and paid one of his welcome visits, adding another bronze to his
collection in
1:46:00.

for ideal racing conditions and the walkers made the most of the
occasion.

Thanks as always to our many judges, officials and helpers. Apologies for anyone I have missed.

The
carnival was held in generally fine weather, beset by icy winds that
struck in the early morning, dropped around midday then whipped up
again towards the close. While chilling bodies, fingers and feet, it
did not wipe away the smiles of all who were simply glad to be back
once again, meeting old friends and acquaintances and racing for their
states, after two COVID-ravaged years.
The carnival started on a bittersweet note, with a minute’s silence before competition began in memory of the late Robin Whyte.
Robin’s dedication and drive in building the LBG walking festival into
the celebration it had become – as well as his participation in every
one of its marquee 20 miles / 30km races up until his health began to
fail in 2020 – were surely inspirational to members of the ACT Race
Walking Club and others who worked so hard to ensure that this, the
first full LBG event without Robin, would be as successful and
satisfying as its predecessors had been under his stewardship. Well
done, ACTRWC, and everyone who pitched in to assist!
Free at
last to gather at Stromlo Forest Park for the first time since 2019,
the VRWC squad came determined to do well. Leading the Victorian charge
were Alanna Peart, Ela Uzun, Corey Dickson and Riley Coughlan,
all of whom had at least one emphatic victory. Other wins, podium
finishes, handicap and Teams successes are featured in the table below.
Numerous
Victorians made the most of the occasion by racing in multiple events,
increasing our medal and team tally and boosting our chances in the
Brennan Shield competition. Corey Dickson had three bites of the
cherry, racing half the 30km before stopping to rest up for the U20
10km (hard work, that!), then blitzing the Open 5km to round out a
solid day’s work.

VRWC ROADWALK S, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 4 JUNE 2022
We
had pretty reasonable winter conditions for our most recent VRWC winter
season roadwalks on Saturday at Middle Park, with the threatening rain
bypassing us and the wind not getting too strong. A total of 37 walkers
toed the line, most in their final warmup before the big LBG Carnival
in Canberra next weekend.
The longer races got underway first, at 2:15PM, and PBs were the order of the day in the 10km. The biggest improver was Kate Siviour who took over 5 minutes off her previous best. Special mentions also to Emily Smith, Eden Morgan, Geromi Tucker, Alejandro Stephens and to Carolyn Rosenbrock who is back to her best.

We
had a good turnout of 39 walkers for the latest round of the VRWC winter
season at Middle Park on Saturday. Conditions were good and we were
finally back to our usual 2km course, as the Australian Grand Prix
motor race cleanup reaches its conclusion.
The longer races were first up, with 19 year old Corey Dickson and 16 year old Marcus Wakim
leading the way, finishing with 5km times Of 20:48 and 22:22
respectively. But the big news was the 10km performance of 75 year old Andrew Jamieson
– his time of 57:36 set a new VRWC M75 record and bettered his recent
Australian M75 record of 58:31. And special mentions to Madeleine Feain and Eden Morgan on their 5km PBs.

The shorter races were underwasy shortly after and it was 11 year old Ela Uzun
who led from the front, stopping the clock with a time of 14:27 in the
3km walk, to break her own VRWC U12 record and better the U13 record as
well. Her 1km split of 4:38 was also a VRWC U12 record. It seems that every time Ela steps on the start line, it is a new
PB and a new club record. Mietta Morgan, Havana Ali, Beau McKinnon and Haris Ali also did good PBs in their races. And finally, we welcomed first time walker Anouk Morgan who completed the 1.5km walk in fine style.

The shorter distance races got underway at 2:30PM, with the amazing 11 year old Ela Uzun
walking an astonishing 2km time of 9:20, bettering the female club
records for the U12 through to U20 age groups. I can't ever remember
someone whitewashing so many of our club records in one race. We also
saw a large number of U10 and U12 walkers making their first
appearances wit us- welcome to Mya McClure, Zoe Bowkett, Jaida Robertson, Georgia McKinnon and Tate Jardine.

We
returned to our Middle Park headquarters for our first Melbourne based
race meet of the winter season. Conditions were wintery but they did
not stop the 33 keen walkers who toed the line in the various races.
The longer races got underway at 2:15PM, with 2021 Olympian Kyle Swan leading from the front to record a quick 36:42 for the 8km. Well done to Emily Smith, Marnie Grace and Kate Sanford on their PBs.

For
the first time in some years, AV road walking action returned to
regional Victoria. Close cooperation between the VRWC and the Ballarat
Race Walking Club enabled a very successful carnival to be staged at
the picturesque Victoria Park venue. While fields were small across the
various championships, the feedback from walkers and supporters was
that the course was excellent, the venue very appealing and the BBQ
sausages even better!
Conditions were chilly but still - pretty
much ideal once you warmed up. The 10km races (AV and club
non-championship) got proceedings underway, with Mark Blackwood
going out hard and never being headed for a good win in 48:18, earning
him the AV Open and 40+ titles as well as the Bert Gardiner medal. Andrew Jamieson added yet another record – this time the Australian 75+ 10km – to his impressive resume in taking 2nd behind Mark. Jemma Peart took out the Women’s Open and Country 10km titles with 54:21 ahead of Ballarat YCW team mate Sarah Brennan, whose 55:43 earned her two silvers as well as the Women’s 40+ title. Carolyn Rosenbrock showed glimpses of her form of a few years ago, winning the Women’s 50+ title in 1:01:49, with Heather Carr and Donna-Marie Elms claiming the minor medals.
Marcus Wakim,
competing by invitation in the U18 race, posted the fastest 5km of the
day with 22:39. Ballarat YCW’s younger brigade cleaned up the junior
Country titles through Alanna Peart, Fraser Saunder, Scott Peart (5km) and Charlotte McDonell (3km). It was pleasing also to have young Tasmanian Sam Lindsay
join us to contest the U16 3km by invitation, after a summer of strong
racing. Sam’s 14:39 shows he’s ready for a good road season.

As usual, our own Club age group titles and Open non-championship races accompanied the AV championships, our young country members competing in these events simultaneously to their AV races. Riley Coughlan was the fastest of the 5km contenders with a brisk 23:32, while Ela Uzun
continues to remake the record book in her image, this time returning
an excellent 14:49 to take the U14 3km title and break her own U12 road
mark. Surprisingly, Julia Baldy
hadn’t raced over 1km before, but her attacking effort to win the U10
championship in 5:40 indicates she’ll be cutting that down
substantially this season. Another surprise on the day came from new
member Alejandro Stephens.
Prior to Sunday Alejandro had raced no further than 3km in 19:18, so
his first 10km race in 59:09 came as a real eye opener and augurs well
for a good winter. It was encouraging to see three young newcomers in Eva Reid (3km in a promising 18:09), her sister Sienna Reid and Zoe Bowkett race with us for the first time, and we hope to see a lot more of them.

Finally, we were honoured to have Australian walking legend and Ballarat resident Willi Sawall
on hand to present the walkers with their AV and VRWC medals. The
influence Willi had on the sport, not only in Australia but across the
English-speaking world in the 1970s and 80s, cannot be overstated. With
his uncompromising, put-it-all-out-there approach to every race he
entered, be it humble club event or an Olympic 50km, he charted new
territory for younger walkers to explore further, shattering
preconceptions and illusions of ‘inferiority’ and inspiring athletes
and coaches across Australia to aim for the heights of international
stardom. For a thorough appraisal of this wonderful athlete’s career,
