VRWC Results - Winter Season 2014
The Winter Season occurs between April and September and covers
the
Australian winterConditions are generally superb for road walking with
mild winter temperatures, fast courses and lots of competition for all
age groups.
VWRC / AUSTRALIAN CENTURIONS 24 HOUR WALK, MIDDLE PARK, 4-5 OCTOBER 2014
The
weekend of 4-5 October 2014 saw the annual Australian Centurions 24
Hour walk, hosted once again by the Victorian Race Walking Club at
Middle Park in inner Melbourne. Alas, the fields were disappointingly
small (3 in the 24 Hour, 1 in the 12 Hour and 4 in the 6 Hour) but
those who did turn out were well prepared and ready to race!
The gun, which was fired at midday on Saturday, signalled the start for our 24 Hour entrants (Terry and Karyn O'Neill and Saul Richardson) and our sole 12 Hour entrant (Michelle Thompson).
Unfortunately, they had to endure a long afternoon of very blustery and
hot conditions, with the temperature peaking around 30C, and it was not
until early evening that the weather abated and the cooler night time
hours offered some relief. Terry built a handy lead early but
conditions, combined with a very tight back and stomach problems,
forced him to slow and he had to retire after 10 hours. Karyn and Saul
continued to brave the strong winds, both going through their own
difficult stages. Saul was content to complete 100km and then retired,
just before the 16 hour mark, leaving Karyn from then on as the sole 24
Hour walker still on the track. She also had to have time off but
gallantly eturned to the track in the final hours to build a few
more kms. In the finish it was Karyn who was the overall winner with
133.75km ahead of Saul with 100.00 km and Terry with 72.50km.
The highlight was provided by Michelle Thompson, the sole 12 Hour
entrant. She set a conservative pace at the start but when the
temperature cooled she kept powering on to record a distance of
101.66km for the 12 hours - a fantastic achievement.
The 6 Hour walkers (John Kilmartin, Clarrie Jack, Steve Jordan and Ken Carter)
joined the fray at the 18 hour mark, walking the final 6 hours of the
event on Sunday morning and finishing when the final gun was fired at
midday on the Sunday. This event saw a classic tussle between John
Kilmartin and Clarrie Jack, nothing separating them for 4 hours until
John had to have a pit stop. Clarrie saw his opportunity, put the pace
on, built a handy lead and held it to the finish. He had everyone
fooled - believing he had not done much training, we were all expecting
him to slow down towards the finish but the seasoned campaigner was
still increasing his lead at the end. Both Clarrie and John walking in
excess of 50 km and it was a PB For John. Ken Carter was a finisher as
usual and it was great to see Steve Jordan fronting up to support the
event after very serious health issues.
The meet also saw the annual Racewalking Australia 100km walk
championships which were won this time around by Michelle Thompson and
Saul Richardson.
It takes a lot of people to run such an event so special
acknowledgement to the long list of VRWC helpers - Bill and Heather
Carr, Damien Elms, David Armstrong, David Cash, David Smyth, Duncan and
Christian Knox, Ian Laurie, Liz Feldman, Mark Donahoo, Marlaine Stanway
(thanks for breakfast Marlaine!), Michael Bodey, Peter Vysma, Ralph
Bennett, Sandra Geisler, Simon Baker, Stuart Cooper, Stuart Kollmorgen,
Susan and Lucas Taylor, Terry and Kyle Swan and Tony Doran . It is a
big list indeed!
Now to the results - full lapsplits are available at http://vrwc.org.au/wp1/?page_id=261.

AV & VRWC ROAD WALK C'SHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 14 SEPTEMBER
Conditions
were perfect for the final carnival of the Victorian winter roadwalking
season and what better way to finish off than with our long distance
championships. The 7:30AM start time saw a small number of hardy
individuals toe the line for the Victorian 50km championship, the VRWC
35km club championship (the Ray Smith Trophy) and a VRWC 6 Hour walk.
32 year old Chris Erickson and 16 year old Adam Garganis (now that's an
interesting age comparison, worthy of the great sports commentator
Bruce McAveny) strode to the front and were never headed, taking first
and second in our VRWC 35km club championship with 2:53:53 and 3:04:54
respectively. Adam's previous longest race was the LBG Carnival 10 Mile
walk so it was a huge effort by him to successfully negotiate his way
through such a challenging long distance.
Once they finished, attention turned to the Victorian 50km where Simon
Evans had a big lead but was struggling. But we did not need to worry
as his lead over former international Michael Harvey was a big one and
the result was never in doubt - Simon taking first place with 5:55:54
and Michael setting for second with 6:10:18. Simon's win in this
championship ensured that he won the Athletics Victoria Norm Goble
Trophy for the third time in 4 years. With medals in four of the five
Victorian championships on offer (gold in the 50km, silver in the 20km
and 30km and bronze in the 15km), he was always going to be hard to
beat this season. And a special mention also for
John Kilmartin whose 6 Hour distance of 49.141km was a PB by over 1km.

VRWC 20km 15km and 10km non-championship races were also contested, the
highlight coming from Heather Carr who broke the W65 Australian record
for the 15km roadwalk. There is no stopping Heather now that she has
entered her new age group. Obviously her time also set a new VRWC W65
club record. It was also good to see super masters walker Andrew
Jamieson back in action, winning the 20km with 1:48:48. And also
congratulations to 14 year old Eliza Clarke who walked her first 10km
in a pretty impressive 55:13.

VRWC RACES, MIDDLE PARK, MELBOURNE, SATURDAY 6 SEPTEMBER
Our
VRWC races on Saturday were very well attended with 57 competitors
testing themselves out over various distances in wonderful early spring
conditions. As is usual at the end of the season, some of our younger
walkers tested themselves out over longer distances but none better
than 12 year old Corey Dickson and 13 year old Hayden Walmsley who both
successfully completed the longest event on offer - the 10km. Corey
might have only turned 12 a couple of months ago but he walked like a
veteran, recording a wonderful 53:56, taking over a minute off Kyle
Swan's club record of 55:18 (actually set when Kyle was only 11).
Hayden, who was our walker of the week last week, also walked
fanastically for his final time of 1:00:48. Further down in distance in
the 5km, Adam Garganis (22:56) and Reese Walmsley (23:50) also showed
good late season form. And how can you go past Heather Carr - now that
she has turned 65, she is rewriting the club records there - this week
a W65 3km record with her time of 16:30. Race results follows. Full
lapsplits can be checked at http://vrwc.org.au/wp1/?page_id=261.

With
our winter season quickly drawing to a close, we had our annual Beat
Your Fastest Time races last Saturday. The concept is a simple
one - choose a distance over which you have raced during the winter and
then race it again with a view to beating your season best time. The
person who beats their time by the most in each division gets to pick a
prize from the table. The day was well supported with 48 walkers
competing in superb sunny conditions. Well done to our winners Rebecca
Henderson, Simon Evans, Marlene Gourlay, Nikola Mandic, Irina Semenova,
Ian Beaumont, Kathleen O'Mahony, Hayden Walmsley, Nikolaj Djordjevic,
Grace Louey, Gemma Lillie and Joel Prys.

past years, we still saw a healthy 61 competitors across a range of
events.
The longer events - the Victorian 30km championship along with VRWC 3
Hour and 20km events - were the first to kick off at 8:30AM. With our
top walkers absent, Preston walker Aaron McDonough made the most of the
opportunity to take an inaugural gold in the 30km, his first ever
Victorian title win. A minor medallist over various distances,
including the 2012 Victorian 50km, his finishing time of 2:49:52 saw
him well clear of the rest of the field. The battle for the minor
medals was an interesting one with Terry O'Neill storming home but just
failing to catch a tiring Simon Evans, their times 3:07:16 and 3:07:45.
The other big performance was from South Australian Tanya Holliday with
an excellent 1:33:07 for the 20km event. She walked 1:32:26 in Taicang
in the World Cup earlier this year and she seems to be getting back
into top shape once again. And a special mention for new club member
Liz Wrigley who won the 3 Hour walk in only her second walk with us.
This is what you call jumping in the deep end!

AV AND VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, MELBOURNE, SATURDAY 19 JULY
Kelly
Ruddick and Rhydian Cowley were the winners of the Victorian 10km
roadwalk championships which were contested on Saturday at Middle Park.
For Kelly, it was her third win in four years in this particular
championship, her time of 46:49 seeing her well clear of Michelle
Laufer 51:52 and Heather Carr 58:31 who took the minor medals. For
Rhydian, it was his first win in this championship and his time of
44:20, although slow by his standards, saw him win comfortably from
junior walkers Adam Garganis 46:55 and Ross Darlow 47:21. For Ross, it
was his first ever 10km attempt and he set a very impressive inaugural
time.

The meet also saw Melbourne based walkers competing in their leg of the
annual Racewalking Australia Postal Challenge with events contested in
age groups from U10 to Masters. Ballarat and Bendigo walkers also
contested their own races last weekend, with the Victorian results
being taken from the combined efforts of all our walkers. The Masters
were ranked according to the Age Graded tables, with Heather Carr
(58:31, 93.26%) and Ralph Bennett (57”36, 91.67%) taking the overall
honours there. In the younger age groups, there were lots of PBs with
perhaps the best performance going to Corey Dickson - a 3km walk in

They
say a picture paints a thousand words....rain, rain, rain, rain, rain,
rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, etc, etc. Conditions were miserable
at our VRWC races at Middle Park last Saturday, as Harrison Karagiorgos
can attest. In fact, I felt almost guilty to be soaking up the sun in
Darwin (well, almost!) but such are the breaks in life.
Terry Swan was in action with camera (see http://www.vrwc.org.au/coppermine/thumbnails.php?album=176) and video (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idxUTtu9qco). Thanks Terry – great job!
It
was a prizes day on Saturday with the pick of the table going to the
winner of the handicap in each division so the races were keenly
contested. The 10km events saw Terry and Karyn O'Neill take the double
with Terry walking his best time in years (58:55 and Karyn just outside
her PB (1:07:32). The wet weather must agree with them. Donna Elms
(30:22) and Jason Kozica (24:42) won the Open 5km handicaps while Emily

It was
a cold and windy Melbourne winter day but our annual Intervals Races
day saw a good turnout and some keen racing, with lots of walkers
managing to complete all 5 2km reps (with 17 minutes per rep). Rhydian
Cowley dominated early but called it quits after 2 reps, leaving Adam
Garganis, Kyle Swan, Stuart Kollmorgen, Aaron McDonough and Michelle
Laufer to lead the way. Lots of our younger walkers participated and
were happy to do either 2 or 3 reps for their day's workout.

AV, AMA, VMA AND VRWC CHAMPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 29 JUNE
49It
was a cold, wet and wintery weekend across Victoria and Sunday morning
was a tough ask for those 55 walkers who braved the elements and turned
out at Middle Park for what was a big morning of championships. And it
was probably even harder for the many officials and judges who were on
hand to setup, run the show and then pack up the equipment in the
drizzly rain. So well done to everyone on a big effort.
The day started at 9AM with the AV, VMA and AMA 20km championships for
men and women. First to the Victorian Open (AV) championships which
were won by Chris Erickson and Heather Carr, albeit in much slower
times than they would normally do.

Now to the Australian Masters (AMA) and Victorian Masters (VMA)

weather meant that numbers were small but we still saw some good walks,
especially by Stuart Kollmorgen (1:45:47 M45), Heather Carr (2:08:54

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, MELBOURNE, SATURDAY 14 JUNE
A good
turnout of 51 walkers gathered at Middle Park last Saturday for the
annual VRWC 'Guess Your Finish Time' races. Walkers nominate a finish
time in advance and then race without the benefit of clocks or wrist
watches. Whoever is closest to his/her predicted time wins the race and
has the pick of the prizes table - yes, it was another prizes day. I
was in Sydney so missed the show so thanks to Mark Donahoo for
forwarding the results to me and thanks to Stuart Cooper for
coordinating the Prizes day table. And thanks to Terry Swan who was
there with his camera as usual (see
http://www.vrwc.org.au/coppermine/).
Results follow. Sort order is based on closeness to finish time guess.
The right hand column shows the places from an actual time perspective.
The 10km saw only two starters and John Martin was the big improver,
walking his first official 10km for an excellent 1:03:04. Most walkers
chose the 5km option with the fast walkers also the ones with the best
pace judgement - Michelle Laufer 25:10 and Jason Kozica 23:58 the best
guesses and Rhydian Cowley taking fastest overall (21:50) and second
place in the men's comp.

LBG CARIVAL, CANBERRA, SUNDAY 8 JUNE 2014
The
48th edition of the annual Lake Burley Griffin roadwalking carnival
took place last Sunday in Canberra in almost perfect conditions - a
crispy morning followed by a sunny winter's day. Over 200 walkers
gathered for what is the biggest walks carnival on the Australian
landscape and, as usual, the racing was of a high standard.
The action got underway at 8AM with the 20 Miles, 10 Miles and 5 Miles
events which are contested over a hilly circuit around Lake Burley
Griffin (a lap of 10 miles is used for the 20M and 10M events and a
short out and back course for the 5M). The blue riband event remains
the 20 Mile classic and, once again, it was Jared Tallent who proved
strongest, winning by over 4 minutes in 2:27:27. It was his ninth win
in this event, one more than the great Willi Sawall, so he now stands
alone at the top of the list. Fellow Olympians Chris Erickson (2:31:50)
and Adam Rutter (2:32:53) took the minor medals, all 3 walkers
considerably slower than in past years and obviously not in top racing
shape post World Cup.
The Men's 10 Miler saw World Cup walkers Rhydian Cowley (1:12:20),
Nathan Brill (1:13:20) and Tyler Jones (1:13:53) take the medals
although Tyler was challenged throughout by fellow junior Adam Garganis
(113:56). And a special mention to 15 year old Kyle Swan whose time of
1:15:15 was sensational. The women's 10 Mile was won by Australian
international Tanya Holliday (1:14:52) for the third time on the trot,
ahead of 2012 Olympian Beki Smith (nee Lee - back in action after
having her first child) and Lauren Bourke. It is worth noting that 8 of
the first 10 in the Men's 10 Mile were aged under 20.
Full results can be viewed at http://www.actwalkers.com.au/lbg-walking-carnival-2014-provisional-results-2/. The first 3 placings as well as the finishing positions of all Victorians are reproduced below.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, MELBOURNE, SATURDAY 31 MAY
Perfect
autumn conditions were on show for the
60 walkers who contested
last Saturday's VRWC roadwalks at Middle Park, Apart from being our
final racing day before next weekend's LBG Carnival in Canberra, it was
a prizes day with the pick of the table to the handicap winner in each
event so the racing was keenly contested. Well done to our handicap
winners Simone McInnes, Jason Kozica, Emily Swan, David Smyth, Karla
Bulte, Hayden Walmsley, Chloe Karagiorgos, Joseph Rickard, Gemma Lillie
and Lewis Rickard. And a special welcome to U12 walker Jeremy Little
who had his first race with us on Saturday. And thanks to Donna Elms
and Pam Tindal who donated additional prizes to the table - always
appreciated!

AV AND VRWC CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, MELBOURNE, SAT 24 MAY
Last
Saturday provided perfect racing conditions for the 65 walkers who
turned out at Middle Park for the Victorian Open 15km roadwalk
championships and the VRWC roadwalk championships. After a number of
silvers last year, the men's Victorian 15km roadwalk championship saw
19 year old Jesse Osborne win his first Open title in the handy time of
1:10:34. With Chris Erickson a surprise retirement early in the race,
Jesse walked solo for most of the distance and finished well clear of
the other placegetters in Aaron McDonough and Simon Evans. Pam Tindal
had a closer battle on her hands in the women's 15km championship but
ended up winning by just under a minute (1:24:23) from Sarah Brennan,
with Donna Elms taking bronze. A number of walkers chose the VRWC 15km
races rather than the Victorian title races so special mention to David
Smyth who powered through to a big PB time of 1:23:33 - in fact, he did
a 10km PB of 54:52 along the way.

VRWC club championships were contested over various younger age groups
(U16, U14, U12 and U9) and we saw some great performances and a number
of impressive PBs. Top of the list had to be 15 year old Kyle Swan
whose 5km time of 21:38 was a 76 sec PB! 14 year old Eliza Clarke was
also in great form with her 5km PB time of 25:16. Special mentions also
to Corey Dickson and Kathleen O'Mahony bwho oth walked doubles, U14 3km
followed by U12 2km, taking medals in both events. And there was a
great battle in the U9 Boy's 1km with Harrison Karagiorgos just edging
out Joel Prys, both boys recording the same PB time of 5:19.

VICTORIAN COUNTRY ROADWALK CHAMPS, BALLARAT, SUNDAY 18 MAY
Our
Victorian walkers were in action on Sunday afternoon at the Ballarat
Racecourse in Miners Rest, just outside Ballarat. It is the first time
this venue has been used and feedback was generally positive. However,
conditions were less than perfect with a headwind making it tough going
for the walkers. Although the field sizes were very small, the racing
was still competitive with a number of good performances. Special
attention for Michael Gillies Smith of Castlemaine who walked his first
ever 10km with a very promising and stylish 58:17, Ross Darlow who
zoomed through the U18 5km in a PB 23:25 and Ellen Dowie who similarly
PB'd with 17:38 in the U16 3km. And of course we put on Racewalking
Victoria championships for our U10 and U12 walkers with Ruby and Fraser
Saunder taking most of the attention with big PB walks. Special thanks
to the Ballarat Race Walking Club who hosted the event and did their
usual fine job.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, MELBOURNE, SATURDAY 10 MAY
Our
VRWC winter season continued on Saturday with round 3 at Middle Park in
metropolitan Melbourne. With 50 walkers in attendance, the racing was
keenly contested in almost perfect cool conditions. We were excited to
have three of our 2014 World Cup walkers in attendance only a few days
after flying back home from Taicang - Chris Erickson, Nathan Brill and
Jesse Osborne. Chris was the only one racing and he strolled through
the 10km in a comfortable 46:09 after walking with Jason Kozica for the
first few laps. We were also excited to see former international
Michael Harvey having his first walk in years - he completed his 10km
in an easy 1:04:39. Michael walked an incredible 10 World Cups in a row
- a record for an Australian. And to top it off, young Rebecca
Henderson attempted her first ever 10km - and did it well in style with
a first up 58:10.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, MELBOURNE, SATURDAY 3 MAY
Mark
Donahoo tells me it was a wet and cold day at Middle Park on Saturday
and hence the overall number of walkers was lower than usual. There was
a problem in the U12 2.5km with some of the girls stopping early and
having to continue. Mark has adjusted their times to compensate. Our
apologies for this. I will be back on deck next Saturday and keeping a
watchful eye on things.

VRWC WINTER SEASON OPENING, MIDDLE PARK, MELBOURNE, SATURDAY 26
APRIL
The
VRWC
winter season opener at Middle Park saw a healthy 56 walkers in
attendance on an afternoon which threatened rain. Luckily the weather
held and conditions were actually quite good. It was great to see
Rhydian Cowley (4km) and Jesse Osborne (8km) have final hitouts before
heading off to China for next weekend's IAAF World Racewalking Cup. We
also welcomed a lot of new walkers having their first races with us at
Middle Park - Madison Clark, Ruby Paten, Charlotte Holmes, Joel Prys,
Harrison Karagiorgos, Molly Holmes and Elise Carbery. We also
welcomed Brian Hamer back after many years absence and welcomed
Queensland walker Dean Nipperess, who is down in Melbourne for a couple
of weeks.
It was a points day (see http://www.vrwc.org.au/vrwcpointscomps.shtml
for an explanation about how it all works) and the handicap placings
are shown. Note that walkers can't get handicap points in their first
walks with us as we need to determine a base on which to base the
handicap. Also, points can only be awarded to walkers who are currently
financial.
