VRWC Results - Summer Season 2006-2007
The Summer Season occurs between October and March and coincides
with the long hot Australian summer. The emphasis in on track walking
and most races are over the shorter track distances. There is also a
strong walking presence in the 'Interclub' Track Competition with all
Athletics Teams fielding walkers in their regular competitions.
For this reason, VRWC only holds a small number of events during
this period.
VRWC RACES, ALBERT PARK, SUNDAY 21 JANUARY 2007
Sunday saw our last Albert Park races for the summer and
unseasonally cool weather meant good racing conditions. With the
Victorian Country and Overage championships being held in Bendigo, we
were missing a lot of regulars but still had some 45 entrants,
including a number of first time walkers.
Top walks for the day were by Russ Dickenson (27:01 for the 5 km walk),
Pam Tindal (27:31 for the 5 km walk) and Cindy Collins (5:55 for the 1
km walk).
The Australian Grand Prix Motor Race setup and scheduling will now lock
us out of the Park until mid April. Club members can expect the winter
fixture to be posted some time in the next month.

VRWC RACES, ALBERT PARK, SUNDAY 17 DECEMBER 2006
Our December races last weekend at Albert Park were well supported
as a number of walkers backed up from their Saturday Shield Competition
walks. The big news was around the wonderful performances by Masters
champions Brenda Riley and Andrew Jamieson. Brenda, walking her first
ever 20 km event, took some 9 minutes of the World Masters W65 20 km
record to record a fantastic 117:39. Brenda's records, set in W55 and
W60 and now W65 are going to take some beating! And Andrew Jamieson,
fresh from his World Masters M60 3000m track record yesterday, backed
up and took 11 secs off his World Masters M60 10 km record. Megan
Szirom walked a very even 20 km time of 100:37 while Chris Erickson
sped over the 10 km distance in a very brisk 44:56. Stuart
Kollmorgen walked a PB of 50:31 while Tamara Attard walked her first
ever 10 km with a great time of 60:55.

We also had lots of walkers contesting the shorter distances. John
Bunker and Heather Carr walked together and crosed the line together,
making sure that the judges could not separate them. Cherylanne
Campbell and Sandra Bertrand showed that mums can do it too. Robert
Walsh walked excellently for his 16:20 over the 5 km. And finally, we
had a great battle in the U12 division between Talie Collins and Chris
Brunton who was having his first walk with the club.

VRWC RACES, ALBERT PARK, SUNDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2006
The second of our VRWC summer racing days was held at Albert Park on
Sunday and we were very pleased with the large number of competitors
(nearly 50) and the qualify of performances on what was a windy and
troublesome day. It was our summer championship day and was followed by
a very successful Annual General Meeting and annual club luncheon.

VRWC RACES, ALBERT PARK, SUNDAY 22 OCTOBER 2006
A good field of 44 walkers turned out for our first
VRWC Summer Season races on Sunday. Yolanda Russell, Siobhan Donovan
and Simon Baker challenged themselves with the longer distances of 20
km and 15 km but the vast majority were content with the intermediate
distances. Mark Donahoo was the pace maker and he and Heather Carr, not
surprisingly, took the points in the 10 km event. Clarrie Jack made one
of his rare appearances and showed that he has lost little of his
competitive edge with a fine time of 58:21 (Clarrie is in the M60
division nowadays).

The 3 km event was an interesting event with Natalie Laurie and Beth
Alexander battling it out in front (great times by both girls) while
John Bunker was next over the line, with his hand heavily bandaged
after a work accident. Rachel Tallent left her racing shoes at home in
Ballarat and her family had to search the shops in Melbourne to find a
pair for her to wear. Sandra Bertrand (Carly's mother) had her first
walk with the club and will improve quickly on this first effort. We
have seen quite a number of parents donning the shoes in the last
couple of years – it's the way to go!
