VRWC Results - Summer Season 2013/2014

VRWC Logo

The Summer Season occurs between October and March and coincides with the long hot Australian summer. The emphasis in on track walking and most races are over the shorter track distances. There is also a strong walking presence in the 'Interclub' Track Competition with all Athletics Teams fielding walkers in their regular competitions.

For this reason, VRWC only holds a small number of events during this period.

VRWC AND VMA TRACK WALKS, DOLOMORE OVAL, MENTONE, SUNDAY 23 MARCH

VRWC hosted the annual Victorian Masters 5000m track walk championships on Sunday morning in their last summer season walk for 2013/2014 - and conditions at Dolomore Oval in Mentone were cool and overcast, perfect for racing.

The Masters women kicked off first and we saw a great battle out front between Sandra Geisler and Michelle Laufer, with Pam Tindal and Heather Carr not far behind and gamely chasing their younger rivals. Michelle eventually took fastest times with 25:49 ahead of Sandra 26:04, Pam 26:19 and Heather 28:09.

VRWC races rounded out the program and our younger walkers also showed out with Adam Garganis winning the 5000m in 22:40 and Reese Walmsley winning the 3000m in 13:48. But it was in the final event of the morning, the 1500m walk, that things really hotted up, Jesse Osborne scorching through to a 13 sec PB of 5:19.54. I think that this is in fact the fastest 1500m ever walked in Australia by a junior walker - and he looked superb. Jason Kozica 6:16.92 and James Christmas 6:17.93 also showed great speed while Philippa Huse, Nikola Mandic and Karla Bulte all walked what looked like PBs to me. And I can't forget to mention Gabrielle Crea whose 3000m time of 17:50 was also a big PB.

VRWC 5000m Open: Start time 10:00AM

5.  Mandic, Nikola      7:11.15     PB 0:15
6.  Bulte, Karla        7:18.45     PB 0:34

While I don't have comprehensive all-time lists for 1500m, I think Jesse fits in at third place overall with that time. The top 4, according to me, read as follows

Dane Bird-Smith   U23    5:16.39   Brisbane, QLD   07/11/2013
David Smith       Open   5:19.1    Melbourne, VIC  07/02/1981

Nathan Deakes     U23    5:22.1    Geelong, VIC    18/10/1997

VICTORIAN AND VRWC RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 19 JANUARY 2014

Just about perfect conditions greeted the 53 walkers at Middle Park on Sunday for the annual Victorian 5km Teams Championships and associated VRWC roadwalks. With work already underway in preparation for the Australian Motor Racing Grand Prix next month, we used our AIMS certified 1km loop rather than our usual 2km loop and it certainly made for a much more exciting event with the road full of walkers.

The Victorian 5km teams championships saw the Athletics Essendon team of Chris Erickson, Jesse Osborne and Connor McShanag win the men's team title and the Ballarat zone team of Sarah Brennan, Jemma Peart and Kobie Somerfield win the women's team title. Overall, Chris Erickson led the men home with 21:50 to finish ahead of Jesse Osborne 22:14 and Brad Simpson 22:21 while 13 year old Eliza Clarke was the fastest of the women with her first ever 5km time of 25:36. It was great to see so many young walkers attacking their first ever longer race and all performed well. And special mentions to Brad Simpson 22:21, Adam Garganis 22:37, Ryan Antidormi 26:03, Cooper Owen 27:23, Sarah Brennan 26:33, Kobie Somerfield 28:45, Lauren Collis 29:55 and Karyn O'Neill 33:18 who all walked PBs.

A variety of additional VRWC races were on offer and there were some impressive results. USA walker Erin Talcott beat her PB by over 1 minute with her 20km time of 1:41:05. It was a very even paced walk in which she was in control throughout. We also saw two of our elite women in action with Kelly Ruddick (a quick 22:40) and Regan Lamble (an easy 25:24) strutting their stuff. 16 year old Reese Walmsley walked a big PB with 23:11 and 10 year old Nikola Mandic walked his first ever 5km with 28:35.

VRWC  ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 1 DECEMBER 2013

Last Sunday saw our latest VRWC roadwalking carnival at Middle Park. The day was hot with a maximum temperature in the low thirties but an early start for our races meant that we were spared the worst of the conditions. Jesse Osborne was the best of the 20km walkers with a very fast 1:31:38 while Michelle Thompson was the best of the women with 1:59:50. Both were close to their PBs.

In the shorter races, Kyle Swan 49:01, Adam Garganis 50:09. Reese Walmsley 24:13 and Philippa Huse 16:08 were the standouts.

VRWC SUMMER SEASON TRACK WALKS, CLIFTON HILL, WEDNESDAY 16 OCTOBER

Our VRWC summer season kicked off last Wednesday evening with track walks at the George Knott track in Clifton Hill. It was a windy evening so fast times were hard to come by in the longer events but Adam Garganis 24:02, Emmet Brasier 13:44 and Kyle Swan 13:51 were all in good form. The 1500m walk saw the largest field and Jesse Osborne used it as an opportunity to blitz his PB with a super fast 5:32. Wow, that is fast walking!
