VRWC Results - Winter Season 2018
The Winter Season occurs between April and September and covers
the
Australian winter. Conditions are generally superb for road walking with
mild winter temperatures, fast courses and lots of competition for all
age groups.
AV AND VRWC CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 2018
The
Victorian winter roadwalking season finished on Sunday morning with the
annual Victorian 50km Championship, along with the annual VRWC 35km
Club Championship, both events starting at 7:30AM. The weather was
good, with cool cloudy conditions and a breeze that gradually picked up
but was never too demanding.
Pramesh Prasad produced the
performance of the day, completing his first ever 50km walk with a new
Fijian Record time of 4:56:55. He headed off at a measured pace and,
although he inevitably slowed, he never died, and was still walking
strongly at the end.
The VRWC 35km Club Championship saw NZ international and VRWC member Quentin Rew defend his title from last year, winning with 2:49:42. Rhydian Cowley
had walked with Quentin for most of the way, but called it quits at
30km, covered in 2:26:53. That opened the door for Pramesh whose 35km
split of 3:18:42 gained him the silver. Michelle Thompson and Tim Erickson battled it out for the bronze but it was Michelle who finished the faster to claim third place with 3:55:33. Kelly Ruddick looked good early but was forced out just after 20km, covered in 1:44:27.

That completes the Victorian winter roadwalking season so it’s time for
a good rest before the summer season kicks off in October.
VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2018
Our
inaugural club road relays were held on Saturday at Middle Park and
they proved to be a great success, with 10 teams of 4 walkers
contesting legs of 3km, 1km, 2km and 4km. Club handicapper Mark Donahoo
picked the teams to try to make the competition as close as possible,
with most teams starting off within a couple of minutes of each other.
Team 3 (Alannah Upson, Havana Ali, Angus Hay and Heath Beveridge)
were the winners, so had picks of the prizes table. We also had prizes
for those walkers who beat their handicap by the biggest amount in each
leg, and these were Alannah Upson (again!), Pam Mews, Aiden Smith and Paige De Lisen.

Our races were followed by our Winter Season Presentations, so it was a big day indeed.
With only one round of our winter season to go (our Victorian 50km
championship), today marked the end of the season for many of our
walking families. Well done everyone on a great winter season. Have a
good rest and see you next season.
VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 25 AUGUST 2018
Melbourne
put on good weather for our latest VRWC roadwalks at Middle Park on
Saturday, with sunny conditions, albeit a cold breeze. With a number of
walkers and their families on the Sunshine Coast for the National
Roadwalk Champs, numbers were down, but we still had 29 walkers in
attendance. Well done to 12 year old Emily Smith who walked her first 5km (33:13). Well done to our young walkers in the 3km and 1.5km, many of whom recorded PBs – Riannah and Heath Tatlock, Alannah and Isabella Dingli, Ela Uzun, Havana Ali and Aiden Smith.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 18 AUGUST 2018
Wild
wintery conditions were forecast for Melbourne on Saturday so numbers
were down at the VRWC winter season roadwalks at Middle Park, with only
31 walkers taking their chances. But those who did brave the elements
were rewarded with mostly dry weather, although the rain did sneak up
on the final few competitors out on the course, and it was very windy!
It was our annual ‘Best Your Season Best’ carnival, with prizes for
those who performed best, relative to their SB for the winter. So
results today are not in order of times but in order of ‘Beat Your
Season Best’ finish. Well done to winners Karyn O’Neill, Pramesh Prasad, Madeleine Feain, Albin Hess, Kathleen O’Mahony, Luke Epps, Emily Smith, Zahlia Heikkila-Dubowik and Aiden Smith.

AV AND VRWC CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 29 JULY 2018
It was cold and very windy at Middle Park on Sunday morning for our AV
and VRWC roadwalking championships, but it did not daunt the 47 hardy
souls who turned out to race.
The first events to start were the 30km, 3 Hour and 20km walks, with Kelly Ruddick providing the highlight with her 30km winning time of 2:37:36. Both Kelly and third placed Tracy Feiner (2:54:21) set new Victorian Masters 30km records in what was their first time over the distance for them both. Pramesh Prasad took second place in the event with a 5 min PB time of 2:46:51.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 21 JULY 2018
Conditions
were just about perfect for the 45 walkers who gathered at Middle Park
for the annual VRWC Intervals Races day on Saturday. The 2km intervals
started every 17 minutes to the idea was to race hard, then rest, then
race hard again, then rest, etc, for as long as felt like it. Of the 28
walkers who started in the first 2km interval, 12 of them completed all
5, a worthy effort. Special mentions to Mark Blackwood who got faster for every one of the five, and to Kevin Cassidy who was just about as efficient. We also welcomed back Tracy Feiner who had her first race with us since 2012. Welcome back Tracy.

Of course, not everyone wanted to do the Intervals races so we had 4km and 2km scratch races on offer. Well done to Holly Cocking and Zahlia Heikkila-Dubowik

walkers had to up the ante and test themselves out over a new distance
– well done to Ela Uzun, Havana Ali, Emma McCaffrey and Heath Tatlock. We also welcomed first timer Addison Paulke. Welcome Addison.

VRWC/VMA/RWA ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 14 JULY 2018
The
weather was perfect for the latest round of VRWC roadwalks last
Saturday afternoon at Middle Park, in inner Melbourne. A large
contingent of 55 walkers fronted for the annual Victorian Masters 10km
roadwalk championships and the VRWC Racewalking Australia Postal
Challenge, which were contested alongside our usual VRWC points races.
24 walkers contested the VMA 10km championships, with some great times recorded in the various divisions. Special mentions to Pramesh Prasad who bettered Dip Chand’s 23 year old Fijian National Record with his time of 49:52, Kelly Ruddick who bettered her own W45 Victorian and VRWC records with her time of 47:30 and to Margaret Beaumont who set a new W80 club record with her time of 1:35:05.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 7 JULY 2018
The
forecast for Melbourne on Saturday was for cold, wet and windy
conditions but it did not put off those 38 hardy walkers who descended
on Middle Park for the latest round of our VRWC winter season. They say
that fortune favours the brave and this proved to be the case, with the
rain stopping just before the start and with conditions staying
reasonable, if windy, for the duration of the racing.
It was a prizes day, with the pick of the table for the person in each
division who did best against their projected handicap. So the results
this week are presented in terms of handicap placings. Well done to
those walkers who did PBs in the windy conditions. Well done also to
our handicap winners Albin Hess, Karyn O’Neill, Steve Havely, Madeleine Feain, Ian Beaumont, Kathleen O’Mahony, Eliza Thompson, Hamish Blackwood and Havana Ali.
Apologies to Kathleen – we had the calculations wrong so missed out on
recognizing here in the awards. We will fix that next week.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 30 JUNE 2018
Our
latest VRWC roadwalks at Middle Park saw 39 walkers compete on Saturday
afternoon in cool, blustery but dry conditions. There were some great
performances, lead by 15 year old Corey Dickson
who took nearly 2 minutes off his 10km PB with a superb 48:44. I always
look upon the 50 minute 10km barrier as significant, and Corey has
monstered it with this performance. Walking alongside Mark Blackwood, he cleared out in the final 2km and looked to have plenty left at the end. We also saw new club records to Darcey Roberts U11-U13 1.5km, 7:25) and Margaret Beamont (W80 3km, 27:10). Overall, our young walkers impressed with PBs galore in the 3km and 1.5km walks.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 16 JUNE
It
was cold and windy at Middle Park on Saturday afternoon, but it did not
stop the 43 hardy walkers who contested our annual ‘Guess Your Time’
races. The concept is a simple one – nominate the time you will walk,
then race without the aid of watches and progress time and see
how close you can get. Those who get closest in each division are the
winners and get to choose from the prizes table.
Well, the rain came down about halfway through and made it very tough
going but some people were still spot on with their predictions. The
results below are sorted on ‘Guess Your Time’. Our best estimators were
Gwen Steed (1 sec), Mark Blackwood (2 secs), Ela Uzun (2 secs) and Kyla Chapman (2 secs).

might have been our first official walk for the winter but the weather
was perfect for everyone at Middle Park on Saturday, with sunny and
still conditions and mild temperatures. With 46 walkers in attendance,

entrants.
Good performances from World Team Championship reps Rhydian Cowley and Kyle Swan, as well as Charlotte Hay, Mark Blackwood, Corey Dickson, Marcus Wakim and Darcey Roberts who bettered our VRWC U11 1km roadwalk record with her time of 4:49.

AV AND VRWC ROAD RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 12 MAY
After
dreadful weather on Friday, conditions cleared just in time for the AV
and VRWC championship roadwalks at Middle Park on Saturday. It was
still cold and windy with intermittent rain but it was better than
perhaps expected, and the 50 competitors made the most of the window of
opportunity.
The women’s Victorian 15km roadwalk championship saw a win to Kelly Ruddick, ahead of Carolyn Rosenbrock and Cassandra Knight.
Kelly celebrated her new W45 age group with a new Victorian W45 record
of 1:14:27 (she also set a new Victorian W45 10km record of 49:59 along
the way). Further, she won the VRWC Elsie JacobsonTrophy which was also
contested.
The men’s Victorian 15km roadwalk championship saw a win to Adam Garganis, ahead of Jason Kozica and Michael Harvey.
However, Adam was not the fastest overall, that honour going to fellow international representative
Kyle Swan who won the associated VRWC U20
championship race.

VRWC ROAD RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 5 MAY
Another
great day at the Victorian Race Walking Club with 51 walkers in action
at Middle Park. I was not there (it’ s a bit far to travel from China!)
but Ralph Bennett has forwarded the results to me. Weather was cool and
partly cloudy. There were a few spots of rain, towards the end of
the 12km, which caused a mild panic as no tents had been erected.
However the rain held off, and packup was completed without getting
wet.

MU12 10:59VRWC ROAD RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 28 APRIL
Our
winter season opening races at Middle Park were very well supported,
with 53 walkers. Given that a lot of our Masters walkers were in Perth
for the Australian Masters Championships, it would have been even more.
Conditions were perfect, with a still mild autumn day, and walkers
contested 8km, 6km, 4km, 2km and 1km events.
Welcome to first timers Liam O'Rourke, Aiden Smith, Harli Lennon, Ela Uzun, Tamisha Upson, Havana Ali and Heath Tatlock. It is great to see a big influx of young walkers. We hope you have a most enjoyable season with us. It was also great to see Adam Garganis and Philippa Huse
having a final hitout before they head off to China on Monday to
represent Australia in the IAAF Race Walking World Team Championships.
Special mentions to some walkers who stood out with excellent performances – Charlotte Hay (20:41), Corey Dickson (18:52), Heath Beveridge (21:10.4), Darcey Roberts (11:05) and Luke Epps (10:35).
