VRWC/AV/VMA  TRACK WALKS, DOLOMORE ATHLETICS TRACK, MENTONE, SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 2024

We had a good turnout of 57 walkers for our track races at Mentone last Saturday afternoon in conditions that were just about perfect for fast walking. The meet included a mix of VRWC races, along with AV and VMA Championships and started with our VRWC 1 Hour and 2 Hour track races. Jonathan Ho, Char Hay and Alejandro Stephens all completed the requisite timeframes, starting first and finishing last, as the shorter races came and went around them. The AV 5000m Teams Championships saw wins to the two Knox Athletics Club teams, with Eden Morgan and Ariana Pashutina the fastest of the AV walkers. The VMA 5000m Championships were keenly contested, with 12 walkers competing. We welcomed Kym Boekel for her first ever racewalk - well done Kym. And congratulations to Gwen Steed, Heather Carr and Ela Uzun on their club records.

AV COUNTRY AND VRWC CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 11 AUGUST 2024

A fine Sunday morning which, unfortunately, attracted only 3 of Victoria’s country walkers for their State championships. On the bright side, one of them was Rio Olympian Rachel Tallent, making her first appearance at Middle Park since 2012. Occupied nowadays with a busy professional life and thus short of training, Rachel’s signature technique was a welcome sight on the Aughtie Drive loop. We hope to see more of it.

Sunshine is what you’re supposed to make hay in and our younger walkers didn’t disappoint, returning a club record and eleven PBs. Ela Uzun celebrated Jemima Montag’s Olympic success by blasting her U14 5km record off the books by almost a minute with a sub-24:00 time of 23:54. The most exciting racing this season has been in the U12s, with Pippa Read and Addison Frenken locked in battle most weeks. They continued the rivalry over 2km on Sunday with big PBs to Pippa (by 0:21), Addi (0:17) and Indigo Marshall-Moodie who clocked her first sub-11:00 2km with a 36 sec improvement.

All four of our U10 starters scored PBs in an encouraging showing, with Payton Welsh again taking a scythe to her previous best with her first ever sub-6:00 1km.

It’s always a pleasure to greet visiting walkers from further afield. This time it was young Tasmanians Adele and Elsie Woodward, over here to try out the RWA course after having raced in Hobart the day before. Their research paid off, to the tune of a 27 Sec PB for Adele over 2km and a whopping 1:41 improvement for Elsie! Well done girls, and we look forward to seeing you back at Middle Park on 25 August. We were also pleased to welcome Jia Wen Heng of Malaysia, a friend of Char Hay’s from the University Games who is studying in Melbourne. We hope to see Jia at more of our races.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 3 AUGUST 2024

Saturday afternoon saw the latest round of the VRWC winter season, with Points Races contested and prizes awarded to the male and female handicap winners in each race. I see that we had 26 walkers in attendance but, as I am in still in Europe, I shall leave it to Stu to do the actual race report which follows.

Whether it was down to the much more agreeable weather, Olympic inspiration, the freedom to let fly on the 2km loop (for only the 2nd time this season), the prospect of nabbing some goodies with a winning handicap or a combination of all four, a return of 13 PBs from a field of 26 starters is impressive by any measure. Well done to all who were successful, both in improving their times and in earning their pick of the prizes table!

Biggest improver by far was Emilie Garside who achieved an astonishing 6:11 PB for 6km and seemed very happy with her bottle of red as a reward. Mya McClure and Hannah Matthews each removed 1:19 from previous 4km times while John Nottle showed you’re never too old to get faster if you’re fit enough. Speaking of fast, Eden Morgan continued on what has been his most productive season to date with a 36sec PB for 8km of 36:59.  Eight-year old Payton Welsh has been improving hand over fist in her first season, and on this occasion she seemed to appreciate the longer course, clocking a huge 1:03 PB of 12:19 for 2km. Logan Allison also took his PB to the cleaner’s with a 0:42 improvement that should see him punch through the 11min barrier soon.

VRWC, VMA AND RWA CHALLENGE ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 27 JULY 2024

Last Saturday afternoon saw 37 walkers in attendance for the annual VMA 10km roadwalk championships, along with the VRWC RWA Postal Challenge. Conditions were cold and drizzly but still good conditions overall. I''m posting these results from the transit lounge in Munich so copying my race report from Stu's weekly newsletter review (thanks Stu!)

The 10km walkers got underway first. Having been ‘dudded’ last week out of a VRWC 3km record because of insufficientjudges, Gwen Steed took advantage of a full panel this time around to post the result of the day, demolishing her own W80+ mark for 10km with 1:19:04. It was a terrific walk by Gwen, who was competing in the VMA championship as well as the Masters Challenge division. Mark Thomas and Carolyn Rosenbrock had the fastest of the Masters 10km times with 56:32 and 1:00:43. New Zealand’s Jonah Cropp, competing in the U20 10km by invitation, took line honours easily with 44:43 and showed he is in fine shape for the upcoming World U20 hampionships in Lima. Alejandro Stephens and Char Hay had the quickest of the Club 10km times, both in the Open division.

The next batch of walkers to head off were those doing 3km, 5km and 8km, followed by the 2km and 1.5km competitors.
Our sole U18 8km entrant, Ariana Pashutina, tore a massive 4:01 from her PB with an excellent 42:24. Meanwhile, the Challenge’s age/distance structure saw six walkers trying new distances. Three of these were in the 5km with Max Davidson opening his account with a quick 24:34, while Hannah Matthews and Mackenzie Turner should both progress in short order with more experience over the distance.

New member Natalie Ramirez, who won U10 gold at the recent LAVic road championships, had her first outing over the testing 2km and shows plenty of promise. Another huge improver was Logan Allison whose 11:47 for 2km was a PB by over a minute. Addison Frenken turned the tables on her Club championship conqueror, Pippa Read, with a 10sec win and a 2km PB. Aria di Benedetto also cut into her previous best in a big way, taking 0:28 from her 1.5km PB.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 20 JULY 2024

As Melbourne endured one of its coldest weekends for the year, 30 hardy souls assembled at Middle Park for the latest round of the VRWC Winter Season. It was windy, cold and wet but the conditions did not deter the determined walkers. The longer event walkers were off first, with Eden Morgan leading the way with a swift 10km time of 46:39. It was especially pleasing to see M60+ walkers Colin Heywood, Andrew Jamieson and John Nottle (with a big PB) all choosing the 10km and all finishing. Not to be outdone, Angus Shuttleworth also raced superbly, easily beating his PB with his 5km time of 26:18.

The shorter distance walkers were off next, with a number of walkers attempting their longest walks so far and with a number of others recording PBs. we also welcomed Holle Burrell to the club for her first walk with us. A special mention to W80+ walker Gwen Steed who bettered her VRWC 3km club record with her time of 22:03. Alas, we did not have the minimum 4 judges on duty so Gwen will have to wait till next time to tick that box.

VRWC,  AV & VMA CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 14 JULY 2024

Cold, damp conditions did not dampen the efforts of the 41 walkers who lined up for the AV, VMA and VRWC championship races on the Aughtie Drive course last Sunday morning. It was the 20km field who opened proceedings, with Will Thompson celebrating his late selection for Paris with an all-the-way AV title win in 1:21:46. While Will, who flies out this week, is unlikely to race in Paris, his form here showed he would be formidable opposition in the Marathon Walk Relay if the opportunity presented itself. Fraser Saunder and Alejandro Stephens took the minor AV medals, while NSW’s Dylan Richardson paid his 3rd visit by invitation this winter to cross in 2nd place in 1:32:14.

In a model display of fast, even-paced walking, Lizzy McMillen (NSW) smashed her previous best time by 3:09 to take a huge step up with her time of 1:30:47. Alanna Peart is working her way steadily back to top form and clocked her second sub-100 min 20km for the year, while Masters 60+ walker Carolyn Rosenbrock turned on a ‘masterful’ display of her own for bronze in 2:06:40.

The AV Age group titles began with the 10km, with two more interstate guests – Chelsea Roberts (NSW) and Sam Lindsay (TAS) – lining up beside the Vics. Marcus Wakim and Riley Coughlan set a cracking pace early before Marcus stepped on it, taking a clear U20 win over  Eden Morgan who continued on his own improvement journey. Eden duelled closely with Sam in the first 5km before the Taswegian pulled away for a big PB win. Unfortunately it wasn’t Chelsea’s day for a PB attack but she still crossed well ahead in the women’s U20 race, while Ariana Pashutina and Emily Smith took the AV gold and silver.

Matilda Read found herself the only AV starter in the 5km, so she attached herself to 10km walker Char Hay for a good slice of it to post her first time over the distance, a very promising 26:42. Meanwhile, Ela Uzun and Angus Shuttleworth easily added to their gold collections in the 3km with times of 14:03 and 15:44 respectively.

The VRWC Club Men’s 20km championship saw another strong, even-paced performance, this time by Corey Dickson whose 1:27:25 gained him the prestigious Alf Robinson trophy. The corresponding Women’s race, held over 10km, saw Char Hay have her name inscribed on the Mabel Robinson trophy for the 3rd time with 53:27.

Three Masters walkers contested the VMA 20km, and it was a pleasure to bid a ‘welcome home’ to Colin Heywood, who has rejoined the VRWC after several years of residence in Darwin. Colin, Andrew Jamieson and Terry O’Neill finished within 4:00 of each other to win their respective age groups.

The U12 and U10 races are usually exciting affairs to watch, and Sunday’s was no exception. In the VRWC U12 2km championship Addison Frenken followed her usual tactic of setting a good early lead, but this time Pippa Read wasn’t letting Addison off the leash and caught her with 250m to go, winning with a 14 sec PB of 10:59. Brodie Welsh added to his list of sub-12:00 times for the boy’s gold. In the U10 2km title race, Payton Welsh and Aria di Benedetto both set good PB times for their medals.

VRWC  ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 6 JULY 2024

A small but enthusiastic field of 26 faced the starter (several times in most cases) for this amalgam of race and speed endurance training session that has become a popular feature of the Winter program. The gun fired every 17 minutes, each time sending the walkers off on a 2km interval as they aimed at the fastest speed they could sustain over up to 5 repeats, so earning themselves more rest before the next one. The social element is welcome as it allows for friendly training-night chatter between intervals.

Mark Blackwood led the field through on all 5 intervals, recording a final 10km time of 46:16. Alejandro Stephens and Char Hay also did well, both under 50 minutes for their 5 laps. It was good to see quite a few of our youngest walkers also in the mix, completing 3 or 2 laps.

We also scheduled VRWC Open Walks, witih Max Davidson and Mya McClure having a close contest in the 3km and Matilda Read well out in front in the 2km.

VRWC, AV AND LA-VIC CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 22 JUNE 2024

Last Saturday was a first for the VRWC. While we have conducted championships on behalf of Athletics Victoria, Athletics Australia, Race Walking Australia and Victorian Masters Athletics for many years, this year we were cooperating with Little Athletics Victoria to conduct LAVic Roadwalk championships for the first time. Other states’ walking clubs have fruitful associations with their respective Little Athletics bodies, and it was time we joined the party.

At close of race entries there were an astonishing 102 LAVic entries, ranging from U9 to U17, evidence that young walkers out there are keen for racing opportunities outside of summer programs. This partnership between LAVic and the VRWC offers Little Athletes new opportunities, both via these championships and within the VRWC winter competition program.

Of course, not everyone makes it to the start line, but we had 97 walkers in total, our biggest carnival day for many years. And conditions were perfect, with cool still conditions for all competitors.

Saturday’s activities commenced with two education sessions:

    • 12.00 noon – Holding Race Walking Events at Your Centre. For parents and Centre officials, this was an introductory session, covering the benefits of race walking, the walking rules, what a judge does and doesn’t do. It also addressed introducing the sport to beginners, the importance of technique and basic coaching activities, and what’s involved in putting on races. It was conducted by Stu Cooper (VRWC president).

    • 12.15pm – Coaching Session for Athletes: How to race walk. This included skills, drills and training tips, understanding judges and the warnings given. It was conducted by Mark Donahoo (Club coach).

Then it was onto our racing program, with the 15km events kicking off at 1:30PM on our Championship Course alongside Albert Park Lake.  Although our Olympic and World Junior walkers have already left, we still had some excellent performances. Will Thompson won this championship last year and he did it again in 2024, but in a much faster time of 1:00:46 (with splits of 20:21, 20:16 and 20:09 on the fast Aughtie Drive course). We also welcomed NSW walkers Dylan Richardson and Jack McGinniskin who took the next 2 places, ahead of Alejandra Stephens who took silver as the second Victorian in a big PB time of 1:14:44. In the absence of Alanna Peart through illness, Maddison Nash seized her opportunity and claimed her first senior AV title in 1:18:28, eclipsing Bec Henderson’s U18 Club record in the process. Maddison has focused on her endurance training and raced little so far this season, an approach which is now paying dividends. Ariana Pashutina, fresh from the Oceania championships in Fiji, ripped over 7 mins from her previous 15km time and also shows an impressive level of condition. Char Hay’s 3rd place won her the VRWC Open title and the Elsie Jacobsen trophy, while Carolyn Rosenbrock did a fine job of wading through the LAVic hordes to finish in under 6:00 k’s.

Riley’s 12:30 for 3km was his fastest on the road and 3rd fastest all round. Ela broke new ground with 8:58, her first sub-9:00 2km, and claimed a fistful of new VRWC records. Other VRWC members to put their racing know-how to good effect and win titles were Amelia Vernal, Matilda Read, Angus Shuttleworth, Addison Frenken, Max Davidson, Indigo Marshall-Moodie, Brodie Welsh and Lily Bowkett, while many others achieved podium finishes.

A lot of moving parts were involved in making this event work. All credit to Mark Donahoo (VRWC) and Brett Johnstone (LAVic) for their groundwork, and to the officials, workers and helpers of both organisations for pulling it all together. Most of the young walkers who contested these races were exploring new territory – race walking on a long road loop rather than a familiar track. Added to that was immersion in an environment that contained elite senior walkers zipping past at regular intervals, giving many youngsters their first glimpse of adults walking at speed. It’s hoped that they enjoyed the experience and left Middle Park both with a sense of achievement and a desire to go further with it. We didn’t hand out those membership forms for nothing!

Thanks as always to what was a huge field of VRWC, AV and LA-VIC officials, judges and helpers who made sure the carnival ran smoothly and successfully. Apologies for anyone we have missed.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 15 JUNE 2024

We had a good turnout of 33 walkers for our annual VRWC Guess Your Time roadwalk meet at Middle Park on Saturday afternoon. The best time estimate of the day went to Paul Moritz who was only 1 secoind off his predicted time in the 6km walk. There were prizes for the best guess in each race. Congrats to winners Jade Chitty, Carolyn Rosenbrock, Paul Moritz, Ariana Pashutina, David Smith, Caitlyn Shipham, Tate Jardine, Abby Fowler and Dimitri Pashutin. Well done to VRWC president Stuart Cooper for coordinating the prize purchases and thanks to Karyn O'Neill, Narelle Campbell and Jackie Fowler for their help on the BBQ. All in all, a very successful and well supported day.

LBG CARNIVAL, STROMLO FOREST PARK, CANBERRA, SUNDAY 9 JUNE 2024

The small VRWC contingent who attended the 57th Lake Burley Race Walking carnival on the long weekend nevertheless made their presence known with a range of impressive performances. While these were, of course, crowned by Rhydian Cowley’s and Bec Henderson’s Australian 35km records, many others were noteworthy and a supply of medals disproportionate to numbers attending made their way south of the Murray.

Congratulations to the following members on their racing efforts at Stromlo Forest Park on Sunday:

VRWC ROAD WALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 1 JUNE 2024

We had sunny and cool conditions for our latest round of the VRWC Winter Season, with the rain staying away on what was the first day of winter. The turnout of 33 competitors made the most of the conditions and there were some good performances. The longer walks got underway first, with Eden Morgan the standout, recording an impressive 10km time of 46:50, a PB of nearly 2 minutes. Emilie Garside continued her excellent early season form with a big 5km PB of 32:55. And a special mention for Gwen Steed who bettered her own VRWC W80 club record by 20 secs with her time of 37:16.

There were quite a few PBs in the 1km walk as our youngest walkers strutted their stuff (wow, are they fast). We had a great battle in the girls 1km event with U12 Addison Frenken finishing just 1 sec ahead of fellow U12

AV, AV SCHOOLS AND VRWC CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 19 MAY 2024

The latest round of our VWRC winter season was a significant one as the club, with help from Athletics Australia, had negotiated with World Athletics to ensure that that the Open 35km, the U20 10km and the U18 5km championships had been granted World Athletics Certification. This ensures that the results from these events will be published on the World Athletics website, will be included in World Top Lists and world rankings and can be used for qualification purposes. VRWC is in a fortunate position that we have 2 certified courses on which we can hold these competitions. We thank World Athletics and Athletics Australia for their support.

The morning was perfect for racing and the turnout was good - 36 walkers in total. The 35km championship was the blue riband event of the meet and developed into a great battle between Australian reps Rhydian Cowley (VIC) and Dylan Richardson (NSW). Dylan had a healthy lead of some 5 minutes at the 20km mark but slowed soon after, retiring at the 30km mark just before being caught by a fast finishing Rhydian who took the title, along with the Jared Tallent Shield, with a time of
2:47:49. Alejandro Stevens' longest race to date had been 30km and he passed that mark in a 6 minute PB, going on to take second place in the 35km with a good inaugural time of 3:28:05.

The meet hosted the annual Victorian Schools Roadwalk Championships for U14, U16, U18 and U20. Fields were small but there were plenty of good walks, with the best efforts by Riley Coughlan (U18 5km 22:19), Ela Uzun (U14 3km 14:01) and Max Davidson (U16 3km 14:15). Note that Ela's 3km roadwalk time of 14:01 set new VRWC club records for U14-U17 girls. Wow! We also welcomed Tasmanian Oliver Morgan.

The latest round of the VRWC Winter Season last Saturday afternoon saw 42 walkers descend on our home course at Middle Park and they were rewarded with perfect autumnal weather. But before competitors faced the starter's pistol, our club coach Mark Donahoo, with help from Simon Baker and Stuart Cooper, conducted the first of our winter coaching clinics which was every well supported.

AV AND VRWC TRACK CHAMPIONSIPS, MENTONE, SUNDAY 28 APRIL 2024

The VRWC winter season kicked off on Sunday morning with track races at Dolomore Reserve in Mentone. The meet included the AV 10,000m Track Championships and VRWC Club Championships. Now that's a great way to kick off the season! A total of 26 walkers, including a few interstate guests, contested the various events on offer. Conditions were just about perfect and there were a number of PBs and some great performances.

The Victorian 10,000m Track Championships saw wins to 16 year old Tasmanian Sam Linsday (in a big PB of 48:13) and 20 year old international walker Alanna Peart (50:03). The first Victorian in the Open Men's race was
Alejandro Stephens (PB 50:47) so he also took Gold. It looked like that accolade would be awarded to Mark Blackwood but he incurred a 1 minute time penalty late in the race and had to be satisfied with the Silver. Silver also to Char Hay who recorded a big PB time of 51:28. We also welcomed Queensland Masters walker Brenda Gannon who recorded a very good time of 58:55.
