VRWC Results - Winter Season 2024
![VRWC Logo](pics/vrwc7.gif)
The Winter Season occurs between April and September and covers
the
Australian winter. Conditions are generally superb for road walking
with
mild winter temperatures, fast courses and lots of competition for all
age groups.
VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 29 JUNE 2024
Melbourne experienced a real winter's day on Saturday, with cold and wet conditions, so we saw only 22 hardy individuals for our latest round of the VRWC Winter Season. The longer races started first, with Eden Morgan, Max Davidson and Alejandro Stevens leading the fields around. And special mentions to Addison Frenken and Mackenzie Turner who tackled the 4km distance for the first time.

VRWC, AV AND LA-VIC CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 22 JUNE 2024
Last
Saturday was a first for the VRWC. While we have conducted
championships on behalf of Athletics Victoria, Athletics Australia,
Race Walking Australia and Victorian Masters Athletics for many years,
this year we were cooperating with Little Athletics Victoria to conduct
LAVic Roadwalk championships for the first time. Other states’ walking
clubs have fruitful associations with their respective Little Athletics
bodies, and it was time we joined the party.
At close of race
entries there were an astonishing 102 LAVic entries, ranging from U9 to
U17, evidence that young walkers out there are keen for racing
opportunities outside of summer programs. This partnership between
LAVic and the VRWC offers Little Athletes new opportunities, both via
these championships and within the VRWC winter competition program.
Of
course, not everyone makes it to the start line, but we had 97 walkers
in total, our biggest carnival day for many years. And conditions were
perfect, with cool still conditions for all competitors.
Saturday’s activities commenced with two education sessions:
• 12.00 noon – Holding Race Walking Events at Your Centre.
For parents and Centre officials, this was an introductory session,
covering the benefits of race walking, the walking rules, what a judge
does and doesn’t do. It also addressed introducing the sport to
beginners, the importance of technique and basic coaching activities,
and what’s involved in putting on races. It was conducted by Stu Cooper
(VRWC president).
• 12.15pm – Coaching Session for Athletes: How to race walk.
This included skills, drills and training tips, understanding judges
and the warnings given. It was conducted by Mark Donahoo (Club coach).
Then
it was onto our racing program, with the 15km events kicking off at
1:30PM on our Championship Course alongside Albert Park Lake.
Although our Olympic and World Junior walkers have already left, we
still had some excellent performances. Will Thompson
won this championship last year and he did it again in 2024, but in a
much faster time of 1:00:46 (with splits of 20:21, 20:16 and 20:09 on
the fast Aughtie Drive course). We also welcomed NSW walkers Dylan Richardson and Jack McGinniskin who took the next 2 places, ahead of Alejandra Stephens who took silver as the second Victorian in a big PB time of 1:14:44. In the absence of Alanna Peart through illness, Maddison Nash
seized her opportunity and claimed her first senior AV title in
1:18:28, eclipsing Bec Henderson’s U18 Club record in the process.
Maddison has focused on her endurance training and raced little so far
this season, an approach which is now paying dividends. Ariana Pashutina,
fresh from the Oceania championships in Fiji, ripped over 7 mins from
her previous 15km time and also shows an impressive level of condition.
Char Hay’s 3rd place won her the VRWC Open title and the Elsie Jacobsen trophy, while Carolyn Rosenbrock did a fine job of wading through the LAVic hordes to finish in under 6:00 k’s.

And
finally, onto our LA-Vic Championships, which saw great fields and
excellent walking. Well done to all the medallists and to all the other
walkers, many of whom were having their first ever road walks. Fastest on the day were Riley Coughlan (U17 3km) and Ela Uzun
(U13 2km). Riley’s 12:30 for 3km was his fastest on the road and 3rd
fastest all round. Ela broke new ground with 8:58, her first sub-9:00
2km, and claimed a fistful of new VRWC records. Other VRWC members to
put their racing know-how to good effect and win titles were Amelia Vernal, Matilda Read, Angus Shuttleworth, Addison Frenken, Max Davidson, Indigo Marshall-Moodie, Brodie Welsh and Lily Bowkett, while many others achieved podium finishes.

A lot of moving parts were involved in making this event work. All credit to Mark Donahoo (VRWC) and Brett Johnstone
(LAVic) for their groundwork, and to the officials, workers and helpers
of both organisations for pulling it all together. Most of the young
walkers who contested these races were exploring new territory – race
walking on a long road loop rather than a familiar track. Added to that
was immersion in an environment that contained elite senior walkers
zipping past at regular intervals, giving many youngsters their first
glimpse of adults walking at speed. It’s hoped that they enjoyed the
experience and left Middle Park both with a sense of achievement and a
desire to go further with it. We didn’t hand out those membership forms
for nothing!
Thanks
as always to what was a huge field of VRWC, AV and LA-VIC officials,
judges and helpers who made sure the carnival ran smoothly and
successfully. Apologies for anyone we have missed.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 15 JUNE 2024
We
had a good turnout of 33 walkers for our annual VRWC Guess Your Time
roadwalk meet at Middle Park on Saturday afternoon. The best time
estimate of the day went to Paul Moritz
who was only 1 secoind off his predicted time in the 6km walk. There
were prizes for the best guess in each race. Congrats to winners Jade Chitty, Carolyn Rosenbrock, Paul Moritz, Ariana Pashutina, David Smith, Caitlyn Shipham, Tate Jardine, Abby Fowler and Dimitri Pashutin. Well done to VRWC president Stuart Cooper for coordinating the prize purchases and thanks to Karyn
O'Neill, Narelle Campbell and Jackie Fowler for their help on the BBQ.
All in all, a very successful and well supported day.

The
small VRWC contingent who attended the 57th Lake Burley Race Walking
carnival on the long weekend nevertheless made their presence known
with a range of impressive performances. While these were, of course,
crowned by Rhydian Cowley’s and Bec Henderson’s
Australian 35km records, many others were noteworthy and a supply of
medals disproportionate to numbers attending made their way south of
the Murray.

We
had sunny and cool conditions for our latest round of the VRWC Winter
Season, with the rain staying away on what was the first day of winter.
The turnout of 33 competitors made the most of the conditions and there
were some good performances. The longer walks got underway first, with Eden Morgan the standout, recording an impressive 10km time of 46:50, a PB of nearly 2 minutes. Emilie Garside continued her excellent early season form with a big 5km PB of 32:55. And a special mention for Gwen Steed who bettered her own VRWC W80 club record by 20 secs with her time of 37:16.

There were quite a few PBs in the 1km walk as our youngest walkers
strutted their stuff (wow, are they fast). We had a great battle in the
girls 1km event with U12 Addison Frenken finishing just 1 sec ahead of fellow U12 Indigo Marshall-Moodie, both girls doing PBs. Brodie Welsh and Arthur Robinson also PB'd in the male 1km event.

The
latest round of our VWRC winter season was a significant one as the
club, with help from Athletics Australia, had negotiated with World
Athletics to ensure that that the Open 35km, the U20 10km and the U18
5km championships had been granted World Athletics Certification. This
ensures that the results from these events will be published on the
World Athletics website, will be included in World Top Lists and world
rankings and can be used for qualification purposes. VRWC is in a
fortunate position that we have 2 certified courses on which we can
hold these competitions. We thank World Athletics and Athletics
Australia for their support.
The morning was perfect for
racing and the turnout was good - 36 walkers in total. The 35km
championship was the blue riband event of the meet and developed into a
great battle between Australian reps Rhydian Cowley (VIC) and Dylan Richardson (NSW).
Dylan had a healthy lead of some 5 minutes at the 20km mark but slowed
soon after, retiring at the 30km mark just before being caught by a
fast finishing Rhydian who took the title, along with the Jared Tallent Shield, with a time of 2:47:49. Alejandro Stevens'
longest race to date had been 30km and he passed that mark in a 6
minute PB, going on to take second place in the 35km with a good
inaugural time of 3:28:05.

The latest round of the VRWC Winter Season last Saturday afternoon saw
42 walkers descend on our home course at Middle Park and they were
rewarded with perfect autumnal weather. But before competitors faced
the starter's pistol, our club coach Mark Donahoo, with help from Simon Baker and Stuart Cooper, conducted the first of our winter coaching clinics which was every well supported.
The longer events kicked off at 2PM, with Marcus Wakim and Mark Blackwood leading out strongly as they paced each other for most of the 6km race. 15 year old Max Davidson was not far behind them and produced perhaps the best walk of the day with his inaugural 6km time of 30:54.

The
VRWC winter season kicked off on Sunday morning with track races at
Dolomore Reserve in Mentone. The meet included the AV 10,000m Track
Championships and VRWC Club Championships. Now that's a great way to
kick off the season! A total of 26 walkers, including a few interstate
guests, contested the various events on offer. Conditions were just
about perfect and there were a number of PBs and some great
performances.
The Victorian 10,000m Track Championships saw wins to 16 year old Tasmanian Sam Linsday (in a big PB of 48:13) and 20 year old international walker Alanna Peart (50:03). The first Victorian in the Open Men's race was Alejandro Stephens (PB 50:47) so he also took Gold. It looked like that accolade would be awarded to Mark Blackwood but he incurred a 1 minute time penalty late in the race and had to be satisfied with the Silver. Silver also to Char Hay who recorded a big PB time of 51:28. We also welcomed Queensland Masters walker Brenda Gannon who recorded a very good time of 58:55.
