ALBERT PARK - SUNDAY 13 MAY 2001
Over 80 walkers competed in a variety of events including AA, AV,
VVAC and VRWC championships as well as a number of Open events. There
was something for everyone and the walking standard was very good. We
used a 2.5 km out and back course within the Albert Park parklands and
the course was flat and fast.
AA 2001 MEN’S 50KM AUSTRALIAN ROAD WALKING CHAMPIONSHIP
and Selection Trial for Men's 50km Road Walk, IAAF World Championships.
Here is the official AA media release describing this event.
South Australians, Liam Murphy and Darren Bown justified their
decision to relocate to Canberra to train under guru coach, Ron Weigel
at the Australian Institute of Sport by taking the top two placings in
today's (Sunday) Australian mens 50km road walk championships at Albert
Park in Melbourne. Perhaps more importantly both recorded personal
bests under the AA qualifying time (3:56.00) for the World
Championships to be held in Edmonton, Canada in August, meeting the
criteria for automatic selection.
Murphy, a former Australian junior representative, made the decision to
step up from 20km to the sport's longest event, only earlier this year,
and despite the limited preparation for 50km was most impressive in
recording 3hrs 54.37, overtaking his tiring teammate and training
partner, Bown in the final 2.5km lap. Bown held on valiantly to record
an equally encouraging 3:55.05.
Olympian Duane Cousins was third in 3:59.25, ahead of Victorian
compatriot, Dom McGrath who recorded 4:01.53, all four athletes making
the most of the excellent weather conditions.
Looking to the future - throw in Australia's 50km number 1, Nathan
Deakes and Australia is set to have a very competitive team for the
World Walking Cup teams event in Turin in November 2002.

AV 2001 MEN’S 20KM VICTORIAN ROAD WALKING CHAMPIONSHIP
With Dominic McGrath and Duane Cousins opting for the 50 km event, with
Brad Malcolm on the sidelines with a virus and with Marcus Dwyer and
Jared Tallent choosing to bypass the event, it was relatively open and
Michael Harvey made the most of the opportunity and added a gold medal
to his silver in the 10 km title last weekend.
Frank Bertei continued his fine Summer season form and stormed home for
a fine second place while 54 year old Andy Jamieson was as consistent
as ever. He was third last week in the 10 km title and made it a second
bronze medal for the season with a gutsy performance.
Athletics Essendon (Mark Donahoo, Chris Erickson and Duncan Knox)
continued its dominance of the teams races and will be hard to beat in
the remaining teams events, having plenty of walkers to choose from and
always seeming to get three of them to the start line each time they
need to.

VVAC MEN'S 20KM WALKING CHAMPIONSHIP
The Victorian Veterans Athletics Club also ran its Victorian
Roadwalking Championships in conjunction with the VRWC fixture. As
would be expected, the number of veteran men attempting the 20 km
distance was low but many women took the opportunity of walking the 10
km distance and many fine performances were recorded. As usual, Andy
Jamieson showed a clean pair of heels to all other men and Heather Carr
was the first of the women to complete the course. Of course, this
means nothing overall as there are separate placegetters in each age
division and all placegetters are to be commended on fine walks.

VRWC 20KM OPEN
Lynne Ventris from WA, who is 43 or 44, walked 1.39.26 which Andy
Jamieson believes might be a new World best. The previous best was, by
his records, by Heather McDonald (now Heather Carr) in 1993 at 1.42.22.
It was certainly a great walk and deserves recognition.
Also walking well was Marcus Dwyer who may well have won the AV 20 km
championship if he had entered. His 93:29 was over 1 minute faster than
Mike Harvey’s winning time. But he chose not to enter and I am
sure that Mike is very grateful for the kind thought! (and this does
not detract from Mike’s fine winning performance in the race that
really counted).

Our VRWC U9, U12, U14 and U16 championship walks brought out a lot
of our up and coming walkers. This year the junior fields have been
very strong and an inspection of the times below makes for impressive
reading. The fields included most of our current underage VLAA title
holders and they were hard pressed by the many other fine young walkers
in the fields.

If we thought this would be a quiet week with only a few walkers,
we were pleasantly surprised by the good fields and fine performances.

The start had to be held for Chris Erickson who turned up as the gun
was about to go. So he had to be content with a slow start while he
composed himself and warmed up. He made up for it with a flying finish
that saw Travis Middlemiss just holding on for a very evenly walked
39:44.

The talking point was Heather Carr’s great first 2 km split
of 9:49. Heather had a great battle with junior Erin Adamcewicz who is
getting back into racing after a break of a month or so. While
Erin won overall, I am sure Heather was very pleased with her time.

ALBERT PARK - 26 MAY 2001
There is nothing like a handicap start to bring out the best in
walkers. Everyone is in with a chance so the whole field goes for it.
The backmarkers seem to be so far back that the position seems hopeless
but as the last 2km lap starts, the field starts to compress and the
backmarkers come flying up towards the leaders.
On this occasion, Adam Barnes walked 52.11 for a 2m 30s PB to hold off
all challengers. Backmarkers Mark Donahoo and Frank Bertie flew home
with great times of 46+ mins. There were a number of season best times
in the field.

Former Australian womens champion (1972) Alison Thompson (Nichols)
had her first competitive walk in nearly 30 years and walked an
impressive 58:58 to finish a long way ahead of the field.
Unfortunately, she had to compete as invitation and that left 15 year
old Jodie Emmerson holding the rest of the field at bay for a great
10km handicap win and a PB for 10 km. Heather Carr was the fastest lady
as usual - a quick 52.26.

CANBERRA, 35TH AFRWC WALKING CHAMPS - SUNDAY 10
JUNE 2001
A great weekend for all those who made the annual pilgrimage to
Canberra. Results are subject to final confirmation.
AFRWC OPEN 20 MILES (32KMS)
While this event was missing the likes of Nathan Deakes, Dion Russell,
Dominic McGrath, Duane Cousins, Liam Murphy and Liam Murphy, this just
gave others the chance to excel. Young NSW walkers Luke Adams and Troy
Sundstrom had a battle out front and walked together for most of the
way until Luke managed to get the vital break. The times were very good
given the hilly out and back 5 mile loop. This was probably the
toughest 20 mile course ever in the 35 year history of this event.
As usual, the Victorians provided both numbers and depth and we took
both first and third in the teams event. Mick Harvey put his name on
the perpetual teams trophy for the third time in the last 6 years and
Marcus Dwyer and Frank Bertei also performed well.

superb time of 74 mins. Rachel walked well for third place.

AFRWC UNDER-20 10,000M
The one Under 20 event was really 3 events in one - the AA 10 Km
championsip, the AFRWC 10 Km and the ACT State 10 Km championship. 16
year old Jared Tallent had an early battle with NSW walker Douglas
Connelly before Douglas was DQed. That left Jared to come home over 3
mins ahead of the rest of the field. We expected a strong NSW showing
in this event but this did not eventuate. Victoria won the teams event
with Jared, Chris and Travis ably backed up by 14 year old Jamie Barnes
backing up after his win in the U15 event.

provided good support. This was, however, an event dominated by NSW

Victorian boys in this event walked superbly and with their overall
efforts, we gained first and third in the teams events.

Not an official AFRWC event but one in which we get a chance to see the

SOME FINAL COMMENTS
Once again we were well supported by the Ballarat Race Walkers Club who
added great depth to our team and helped us win many shields. Thanks to
Daryl Biggin for his help and support.
We dominated the male competition, winning 4 of the 5 teams events
on offer. This was also the case last year. For many years NSW
dominated the junior ranks but we have matched them in recent years.
This is very pleasing.
We have many very good female walkers but unfortunately, for
various reasons, they did not attend this year’s Canberra event.
This left the way open for NSW Race Walking Club to dominate the female
section, just as we dominated the male section.
This meant the the honours were equally shared between NSW Race
Walking Club and VRWC. This is a reflection of the efforts put in by
our walkers given that it is a 2.5 hour trip daytrip from Sydney
compared with a 3 day weekend trip for us. The event will always be
unbalanced in favour of NSW and the challenge for us is to continue to
go the extra mile to match them.
The sport looks healthy indeed. The standard was as high as ever
and I saw so many good performances. It is hard to pick out the top
ones when everyone did so well but I would just like to finish by
commenting on the following walkers who deserve special recognition
Jared Tallent has won the AA Under 20 10,000m title at only
16 years of age. He is off next month to the World Youths Championships
and, with a time of 43:53 in this race, he is ready to take on the
best.
Jake Hogan came 4th in the U15 3000m (to help the U15 team)
and then backed up and won the U12 2000m against very stong opposition.
He was really distressed after his first race but regrouped well to
take the U12 title. Now that’s real team spirit.
Jamie Barnes has competed in the U15 event for each of the
last 3 years, coming 7th in 1999, 3rd in 2000 and finally winning this
year in a PB performance. On each occasion, he has helped VRWC to win
the teams trophy. Persistence and determination pays off. Jamie is
developing into a fine walker.
ALBERT PARK - SATURDAY 16 JUNE 2001
A cracker of a race with some great battles. Mark Donahoo, Chris
Erickson and Andy Jamieson had a great tussle at the front of the field
before Mark was to win it. Murray Dickinson and Heather Carr had their
own veteran battle which swung first one way then the other before
Heather won out by a couple of seconds. 18 year old Erin Adamcewicz did
a PB by some 7 secs. Simone Kuppler made a welcome return to walking at
Albert Park with a great first up 41:47. Travis Middlemiss was too
strong for Tim Erickson after an easy first 4 km.

ALBERT PARK - 21 JULY 2001
With most people having a rest after the battles of the last few
weeks, it was only the truly keen ones who raced today. Big efforts by
Adam Barnes (5km PB by over 30 secs) and Jamie Barnes (3km PB by 3
secs) on big walks.

ALBERT PARK - SUNDAY 5 AUGUST 2001
ATHLETICS VICTORIA AND VRWC EVENTS
Cold windy conditions did not deter a number of memorable
performances but none moreso than Duncan Knox who won his first senior
Victorian championship after some 20+ years of trying. The well known
Essendon walker only had to finish to secure the title but nothing is
certain in a 50km race. It was with great relief that he finally
crossed the line. It was his first 50 km finish since the '80s and was
well off his 4:30 PB but I don't think he will be worried about that
when he pins his wreath onto his Essendon singlet next season.
The Victorian titles served as an indicator of form for the Hobart
Aussie titles in Sept and good performances were recorded by all the
winners. Jared Tallent showed great style and speed in his first hitout
since the World Youth Champs. Jamie Barnes, Erin Adamcewicz, Daniel
Lineen and Bridgitte Burns all recorded PBs in winning their respective
age groups. Congratulations to all the walkers.

ALBERT PARK - SAT 11 AUGUST 2001
A very good turnout for a non-championship day. The highlight was
young Jamie Barnes who did a 6 minute PB to record 51:26 for 10 km - at
14 years of age. Jamie made it look easy and held his form and pace
well during the second half. Michael Beaton-Wells also did a PB but had
to settle for 4th place in a good race. Mark DOnahoo and Tracy
Rosengrave showed good speed to win their respective events and Kylie
Bonney continues to improve with each race. Her 25:19 was 17 secs
faster than her previous best this season since returning from
retirement.

RESULTS - PARTNERS RACES
The partner race is held once each winter season. Names are chosen at
random and matched - one long walker with one shorter distance walker.
For each warning, the team is docked 30 seconds so the pressure is on
to walk fast but fairly if you want to win. The senior event should
have been an easy win for Mark Donahoo and Gwen Steed but Gwen was
forced to retire with a recurring injury so that left the race open for
Tim and Jodie to pick up the prize ahead of Jamie and Tyne.
The junior partner race was closely contested and Eda and Tylah just
held out Patrick and Ergenekon. Everyone seemed to enjoy this event as
something a bit different.

HAROLD STEVENS ATHLETICS TRACK, COBURG - SATURDAY

VRWC 2 HOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
16 year old Adam Barnes had his first venture over the 2 hour distance
and showed good form to win the club championship with just over 20 km.
However, the really big performance was by
Andy Jamieson whose
20 km time of 95:12.7 breaks the current
world veterans record
for the
55-59 age group which is currently held by New
Zealander Gary Little in 96+. His time also beats the best ever
performance in this age group which was held by Willi Sawall wih 95:25.
Congratulations to Andy who walked a very strong and even race.

HOBART - SUN 02 SEPT 2001
AUSTRALIAN ROAD WALKING CHAMPIONSHIPS
A small but select group of Victorians made the journey to Hobart
to compete in the Australian Winter Walking Championships. In the 9
events, we achieved 4 golds, 3 silvers and 3 bronzes. Well done to our
4 Australian Champions - Erin Adamcewicz, Bridgitte Burns, Jared
Tallent and Jamie Barnes. Congratulations to our team manager Tracy
Rosengrave who found time to pick up the silver in the senior womens
race. Congratulations to all our Under 14s who had what was probably
their first taste of AA walking. In particular, well done to Kyle
Bryant and Daniel Lineen who picked up the silver and bronze medals.
