VRWC Logo

The Summer Season occurs between October and March and coincides with the long hot Australian summer. The emphasis in on track walking and most races are over the shorter track distances. There is also a strong walking presence in the 'Interclub' Track Competition with all Athletics Teams fielding walkers in their regular competitions.

For this reason, VRWC only holds a small number of events during this period.

VMA CHAMPIONSHIPS AND VRWC RACES, DOLOMORE OVAL, MENTONE, SUNDAY 10 APRIL 2011

It was cool, overcast and internittently windy at Mentone for the annual VMA 5000m track walk championships last Sunday morning but the rain held off and our walkers raced well. Kelly Ruddick 23:23 and Stuart Kollmorgen 22:13 won their respective races and there were a whole swag of walkers over the 80% Agre Graded Performance mark. The best were Heather Carr with 92.66% (26:59 for W60) and Bob Gardiner 90.31% (29:36 for M75). It was great to see Tony Johnson back in walking mode and doing it in fine style to win the M70 with 30:41. We also welcomed Croatian walker Sasha Radotic, currently in Australia for next weekend's Coburg 24 Hour Run – he took third in the M40 division with 27:15.

VRWC ROAD RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 30 JANUARY 2011

Sunday saw 40oC forecast for Melbourne and it certainly got very hot very early. So I was very pleasantly surprised to see so many walkers in action (50 in total) at Middle Park for our scheduled morning races. The first event to kick off was the 20km at 8:30AM and we saw 4 brave souls set out on what turned out to be a very torrid affair. But I am pleased to advise that they all saw it out and finished, albeit in slower times than normal. They are certainly the 'walkers of the week' in my opinion for such a superb effort in dreadful conditions – blue skies and a scorching sun.

4.  Jordan, Steve         1:19:25    2:42:03

The next races were scheduled to start at 9AM and most of the remaining walkers chose to start then rather than wait until their scheduled start times later in the morning (sensible!). We welcomed 3 of our South Australian compatriots and they all walked well – Kim Mottrom 25:22 and Justin Hill 29:57 in the 5km and Sandy Brunner 19:56 in the 3km. Special mentions to Pam Tindal 57:36 and Lewis Clark 57:17 in the 10km, Aaron McDonough 26:53 in the 5km and Pam Mews 36:13 in the 3km after having major ankle surgery and a hip replacement! Welcome back Pam!

VRWC ROAD RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 9 JANUARY 2011

The Sunday morning saw just about perfect conditions for our first VRWC races of the new year – overcast, still and a temperature in the high teens – and some 55 walkers availed themselves of the opportunity.

The first events to kick off were the 20km, 15km and 10km events at 9AM. Caitlin Brunton was the best over the 20km with a time of 2:02:55, nearly 9 minutes better then her best. Michelle Thompson also walked well with 2:09:43, just 1 minute outside her PB of last November. Stuart Kollmorgen was the star of the 15km, winning in fine style with 1:14:30 to break his own M40 Victorian record by 34 secs. Kelly Ruddick was the standout in the 10km with 47:45, not far outside her PB of 47:09 – and this after her record breaking 3000m walk in Shield competition the previous day.

VRWC TRACK RACES, GEORGE KNOTT  TRACK, CLIFTON HILL, WEDNESDAY 15 DECEMBER 2010

Last Wednesday evening, we had our last VRWC summer races before Christmas and a small number of keen walkers availed themselves of the chance for a hitout in perfect conditions – overcast and cool. The 5000m and 3000m races kicked off at 6:30PM and the star had to be 11 year old Kyle Swan whose 25:57 was amazing for one so young. At the other end of the age spectrum, 74 year old Bob Gardiner recorded his best 5000m for some time with 29:30. In the 3000m Donna Elms recorded a track PB with 17:43 to round out the good performances. The 1500m followed at 7:15PM and it did not take long for Rhydian Cowley to amaze us all with his 5:41 – wow! Lucas Taylor was next in with a 3 sec PB of 7:20 while Jason Kozica completed a good second race with 7:20. Behind them, the young walkers also recorded a number of Pbs – Liam Burgess 8:14, Kurtis Mathews 9:02 and Lee Taylor 9:40. All in all, a great night's walking.

VRWC SUMMER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 14 NOV 2010

After the torrential rains of Saturday, conditions were still and dry for Sunday (apart from plenty of large pools of water trackside!) and conditions were good for racing. But it was a busy athletics day in Melbourne with Little Aths relays, a JDS camp day and the Team Vic presentations so our overall numbers were down – only 44 walkers in total. Thanks as usual to all our officials. Sorry if I missed anyone.

VRWC ROAD RACES, ALBERT PARK, SUNDAY 24 OCTOBER 2010

Our first VRWC races for the summer were held on Sunday morning in perfect Melbourne weather – an overnight low of 9oC and rising to a high of 20oC with sunny still conditions. Apart from the usual large number of local competitors, we were very excited to play host to a significant number of walkers from interstate – Ian Rayson and Brendon Reading from ACT, Regan Lamble and Sean Fitzsimons from the AIS, Dane Bird-Smith, Brad Aiton, Brandon and Nick Dewar, Jessica Pickles and Jesse Osborne from QLD and Kim Mottrom from SA.

The 20km, 15km and 10km walkers were first to kick off at 9AM and the pace was on from the start with Dane Bird-Smith, Sean Fitzsimons and Ian Rayson leading through the first km in 4:03. From then on, Dane and Sean raced side by side with Ian close behind while the rest of the field chased. Dane reached the 10km mark first in 42:09, easily his best road time and not far off his leading track time of 41:32. Next in was Sean whose 42:14 was a 51 sec PB and a time which showed that his time at the AIS is now starting to pay dividends. Ian was not far behind in 42:21 but for him it was the half way mark of his longer 20km race. He held on well to eventually finish with a PB time of 1:26:30 to cap off great races for all three.

They were not the only ones in fine form as we saw a whole host of PBs but none finer than 16 year old Brad Aiton whose 44:00 was not only a 25 sec PB but also gives him a qualifier for the 2011 World Youth Games. Others to excel with PBs in the good conditions included Rhydian Cowley (1:31:26 for 20km), Aaron McDonough with an M35 Victorian Record for the 15km (1:22:27), Regan Lamble 47:03), Nick Dewar (46:54), Jesse Osborne (47:18) and Brandon Dewar (47:47). 14 year old Nathan Brill excited with another great 10km time in 47:30 while Stephanie George (1:02:32) and Josh Dillon (50:45) walked their first ever 10km races. It was all happening!
