Kate
Suich with club secretary Tim Erickson
Kate first attended VRWC in 1981 with her future husband Mark
Donahoo. In the early days, Kate's role was as a spectator but, from
1983 until around 2001, she was often involved in manning the feed
table for the long distance events, a role she also performed when Mark
raced for Australia in 1985, 1987, 1993 and 1995.
In 1993, when Barbara Gardiner took on the role of Social Secretary,
Joyce Summers and Kate took on subsidiary roles organising social
events and working alongside her in the kitchen.
As a team they organised the highly successful wake marking the demise
of the old clubrooms in 1995. On this occasion, many past and present
members attended.
Once new clubrooms were sourced in the Middle Park Bowling Club, social
activities were once again scheduled, this time in the main room of the
Bowling Club. These included dinners and trivia nights. Barbara and
Joyce and Kate were responsible for organizing and at times catering
for these events. Amongst the biggest of these organizational
activities was the annual luncheon which was held in conjunction with
the AGM for a number of years. Many other more minor events like club
barbeques also took place.
Of course, all during this period, Barbara, Joyce and Kate continued to
run the canteen on a weekly basis and raised much valuable money for
the club, much of which was spent on equipment. They continue in this
role to this day. It is fair to say that their work has been a major
factor in the club's current success and inclusiveness.
In 2008, Barb and Joyce were granted Honorary Life Membership of the
club. In 2010 we were pleased to be able to grant Kate her Honorary
Life Membership.
