Fred was part of the small group of walkers who formed the Victorian Race Walking Club in 1921. He was on the initial organising committee for the club and mixed club duties with his walking. He took over the role of Secretary in 1928 when Frank O’Rourke was transferred to Sydney.
A member of Footscray Harriers, he was an excellent walker over the
1 mile distance and had a number of fine wins during the 1920’s.
Once his walking career finished, he remained involved in the club as
an official and was finally awarded his life membership in 1955, some
35 years after he had helped form the club.
