Most Melbourne based walkers
will recognise David Cash as one of our regular VRWC judges at Middle
Park. But they may not realise how far back his involvement with the
sport and with the club actually goes.
When he retired after a successful career as an amateur cyclist, David
joined the Sandringham Athletics Club in 1978, starting to compete in
Athletics Victoria Interclub competition. He quickly found racewalking,
joining VAWC in 1979.
He competed for our club from 1979 to 1993 and was very good, regularly
representing Victoria at Australian Championship and Federation level.
In those days, our main interclub walk distances were 1500m and 3000m.
Possessed of great speed, David's 1500m track walk PB stood at 5:45.0
(08/11/1980) and his 3000m times were regularly in the mid 12 minute
range. His highest ranking performances in Victorian championships read
as follows
1981 |
Victorian 3000m Track Championship |
4th |
12:37.4 |
1982 |
Victorian 50km Road Championship | 3rd |
4:42:00 |

Victorian 50km Road Championship | 3rd |
4:43:00 |
1985 |
Victorian 30km Road Championship | 3rd |

He was also part of our 1984 20 Mile Walk Teams gold medal in the LBG Carnival (2:47:37).

He was forced to retire from racewalking in 1993, the result of some
long term wear and tear from his many years of competitive sport.
Rather than turn away from the sport, he turned his hand to racewalk
judging at the Masters level, and was mentored by the late great Ray
Smith.
Over the course of time, he extended his repertoire to become an
Athletics Victoria official, as well as judging in the wider
racewalking world. He is of course one of our regular VRWC club judges
and has been for many years. This year he celebrates 40 years with the
club, a milestone that should not go unnoticed.

At the 2019 VRWC Annual General Meeting, David was awarded life
membership, a fitting recognition of his many years of service to our
club.
David is congratulated by VRWC President Stuart Cooper on the occasion of his VRWC Life Membership on 17th November 2019
